I've seen it done both ways---with and without a visible rabbit on stage. And I choose the former. "Harvey" is a tough one on screen and stage. But stage is infinitely tougher because the pacing can get sluggish no matter where it's produced. I've seen visible rabbits on stage that don't talk. It's not bad. But I almost wished for a Hobbes-style rabbit as a counterpart to a Calvin-style Elwood. Harvey is everything to Elwood, but I struggle with the one-sided conversations because they don't convey the buddy-buddy relationship. Calvin and Hobbes and Elwood and Harvey have a love nobody else could see. But we should be able to.
My sister got the tickets for my birthday for the two of us to go see "Harvey." I was in this play in high school, and so it was wonderful to experience this 50 years later. The sets were amazing, so realistic, and the actors had great timing, expression, capturing that time period and the nuances of the story so well. So many comical moments and touching parts, as well. It was so enjoyable to remember the lines and story from all those years earlier. I even got to talk to Elwood before the play, telling him that I played Myrtle Mae when I was a junior in high school. He winked, gave me his card, and said call him if I saw Harvey. I highly recommend seeing this classic play. You'll be glad you did.
We had a good time watching the show. Ben Dibbles is as good as Jimmy Stewart.
took the two grand children to the play...they are 25 years old and eleven and both loved the Harvey movie...felt the play was good and I loved the fact that Elwood walked around the theatre before the play began approaching the audience and asking if they had seen Harvey. He is a remarkable actor!
Charming show with enjoyable actors. Before the show, the main character wandered around the audience handing out cards. Lots of laughs and appropriate to bring children too. Thought it was an all around excellent production and we will be going to the Walnut Street Theatre again after this lovely experience.
Did not see Jimmy Stewart or a 6'3" white rabbit, but the show was very well done and very enjoyable. Go see Harvey.....
Totally enjoyed the show end to end! Very funny, stage sets were very beautiful, and meticulously built. Ben (Elwood P Dowd) was out greeting the audience prior to the show start. The show made our night out the best!!!!
Have seen the Jimmy Stewart movie at least a dozen times, but never caught the play before. This production was absolutely delightful. A first-rate cast throughout, nice sets and 'special Pooka effects.' Ben Dibble, Mary Martello and Greg Wood showed their glorious comedic abilities from start to finish, and Ellie Mooney was endearingly goofy as the frustrated Myrtle Mae. A great touch was Dibble's cavorting through the audience before the curtain, in the character of Elwood P. Dowd, searching for his missing friend. Whether you saw the movie when released in 1950, or are 10 years old and never heard of 'Harvey,' you'll go away smiling.
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the performance. I guess we ordered our tickets late and had to sit in the last row in the balcony, but nonetheless, we could see and hear everything very well. The actors really got into their roles in an amusing and believable fashion (even Jack O'Hare himself!). Thanks for a great performance!
