About

In 2005, long before Justin Vernon started making recordings under the name of Bon Iver -- and before his previous band, DeYarmond Edison, had even split up -- he collaborated with Collections of Colonies of Bees' Jon Mueller, Chris Rosenau, Jim Schoenecker, Daniel Spack, and Thomas Wincek on a side project called Volcano Choir. The group's first album, Unmap, was recorded in Vernon's studio in late 2008. The buzz surrounding this release was palpable, given that it was essentially arriving on the heels of Bon Iver's 2008 debut, For Emma, Forever Ago, an album that had enjoyed considerable popularity among indie crowds that year. Unmap was released on Jagjaguwar Records in the fall of 2009. ~ Margaret Reges, Rovi

Phenomenal concert. Volcano Choir is immensely talented and fantastic to watch live. Could have gone on for hours more and I would have been happy!

Great show. Sonically overwhelming. Layers and textures of music that expand beyond the normal indie rock experience. Justin Vernon is amazing artist and band supporting him were outstanding. Highly recommend to see this band live. Look forward to another album and tour from these guys in the future

    disappointing

    by Spunky1954 on 10/1/13Orpheum Theater - Madison

Volume was painfully loud. Justin's hand gestures were distracting. Left after 3 songs. First time I ever left a concert in my life. The venue could not handle the sound.

    Justin sang his heart out

by dbec on 9/30/13Orpheum Theater - Madison

Amazing concert, sounded as good if not better than the album itself. Small venue was an added element to making everything a perfect night.

    Stunning show

    by juliagulia187 on 9/30/13Orpheum Theater - Madison

Volcano Choir is so ridiculously unique. I've never heard anything like their sound. I went to this concert mostly to witness the live talent of my fellow Wisconsinite Justin Vernon, and I was not disappointed. Their sound was flawless, and their light show was mesmerizing. All of their songs are so different. Their chord progressions are unpredictable and interesting. Justin Vernon is a master of sound mixing and he proved this while managing tons of different settings on his mic at his "podium." Volcano Choir's sound isn't for everyone, but for those seeking a captivating, unique band, look no further. Great show.

This was seriously the most unforgettable show I've seen in my entire life. They sounded better live than their album.

Genius concert by Justin Vernon and mates

by BeaJonez on 9/18/13Webster Hall - New York

Webster Hall is a superb venue; the decor, the acoustics, and the fact that it's also a club... Volcano Choir put on one hell of a show, especially since it was their last night on tour. They played almost every song they've recorded, and tested out two new ones. I can't forget to mention their opening act, Sylvan Esso was punchy, and a lot of fun to watch/ listen to.

Live, rollicking, exciting. Covered Bon Iver's "Woods." Sprawling. Perfect.
