About

Swingtime Salute, An On-Deck Revue recreates a WWII-era variety show on the deck of the Battleship Wisconsin, Thursday through Sunday evenings at 8:00 pm.  Dashing sailors and dishy dames, accompanied by a live, on-stage band, expertly belt out the era's popular tunes from the Andrews Sisters, Bing Crosby, Glenn Miller, Jimmy Dorsey and more.  This retro celebration of the Swing Era is one for the boys, the gals, and the whole family! Recommended for ages 4 and up. Produced by Nauticus and Virginia Stage Company.

    Missed the Boat!

by VaDistaff on 7/11/13Wells Theatre - Norfolk

The Swingtime Salute was fun and the performers were excellent. Enjoyable for all age groups! The sound level was very good, not too loud, not too quiet. However, the administration of the event was disappointing. It was supposed to be on the deck of the USS Wisconsin. It was very hot, so they moved it to an inner auditorium. That was ok, but then we were not permitted to even walk onto the Wisconsin for a few minutes. Our out-of-town visitors were extremely disappointed. Also, we paid the extra 25% fee for VIP preferred seating and a special souvenir. We got preferred seating (first two rows in an auditorium - not much difference), but we got only the same souvenir (plastic fan) that everyone had received. The Ushers didn't even know what I was talking about when I asked about the VIP tickets. Very disappointing. If we had known we wouldn't even been able to touch the ship, we would have listened to swing songs on the radio on Saturday night.

    A Unique Gem

by CatdaddyOnKeys on 7/10/13Wells Theatre - Norfolk

A rare treat - staged on the deck of the USS Wisconsin, and performed as though you are attending a 1940s USO review, Brilliantly staged, beautiful and balanced singing. Do not miss.

    Swingtime Salute

by anicoleslaw on 7/1/13Wells Theatre - Norfolk

This USO-simulated show featured a VERY talented cast and band who played, sang and danced their way into the hearts of the audience. I attended the show with my daughters (age 20 and 15), and they loved it as well! Kudos! Recommendations: 1. The price of admission was steep. If the price was lowered about $ 10-15, I bet the theater would have been full. 2. Perhaps a few less slower songs and a few more lively ones with swing dancing. After all, the show is entitled "Swingtime Salute". There was a lot of tap dancing, but not too much actual swing dancing.

    Delightful, enjoyable, fun!

by JLance on 6/29/13Wells Theatre - Norfolk

We so enjoyed this USO style show. The characters were talented and fun. I was disappointed that the show was inside due to inclement weather. I was looking forward to the show under the big guns of the mighty USS WISCONSIN, so four stars. Despite that we had an enjoyable evening. BTW we rode the Tide from Newtown Road to MacArthur Center, Nautilus is just a short walk from there. Before the show we dined at the Vineyards and enjoyed a delicious meal. All in all an enjoyable night out.

    5 star salute!!

by Anonymous on 6/28/13Wells Theatre - Norfolk

Thought Swingtime Salute was wonderful.. Sweet cast. How grand that the cast honored the military who was present that evening! Weather prevented us from seeing the show on the Wisconsin, but the show was great even without the scenery. Hats off to the crew. Look forward to seeing it again.

Show was great, weather was HOT HOT!! Over sold the VIP seating, we got there about 15 minutest before the show and had to sit several rows back and we didn't get a fan.

A real blast from the past!

by Ptownmom on 7/9/12Nauticus - Norfolk

A group of us went to the Swingtime Salute. It was our first time aboard the Wisconsin and I can't think of a better way to spend an evening than sitting on the deck overlooking the beautiful Elizabeth River while being entertained.

The show was creative and entertaining, but cost more money than it was worth. I would have given it a 5 star rating if it was $20 cheaper.

we were so glad to be able to see the production on the ship --- I understand some performances had to be moved because of the heat --- We truly enjoyed the show, and perhaps the success (hopefully) will prompt a similar production next summer -- Thank you!

Swingtime Salute - A delightful evening on the riv

    by CV62 on 7/7/12Nauticus - Norfolk

The show was very well done. The performers were good, the jokes were corny, the atmosphere really made the evening - it was an all around good time.
