About

In the early 1960s, a young woman disfigured by a childhood accident travels across the South in search of a televangelist’s healing miracle. On her journey, Violet meets two young soldiers who help her learn about courage, beauty and her own self-worth. Set against the backdrop of the Civil Rights era, Violet’s odyssey opens her eyes to the realities of racism and segregation. With a dynamic score of bluegrass, gospel, country and rock, Violet features a distinctly American musical voice. Tony-nominated director Jeff Calhoun (Broadway’s Newsies) directs this story of love, hope and healing.

    Great show!

Some very talented singers! Amazing venue - maybe one of the coolest I've ever attended.

    Far better than expected

by mmwfriends on 2/28/14Ford's Theatre - Washington

When we chose this play we did not have any idea it would be as good as it was. Acting and singing were fantastic. Highly recommend.

Ther were a few very talented performers but the story line was dull and ran slowly. Violet needed a makeup scar on her face to make the story more believable.

    Violet was Forgettable

by ClassySalmon on 2/24/14Ford's Theatre - Washington

I've attended numerous performances at Ford's Theatre, but this was my first disappointment. The acting, the music, and the story were just okay. Singers needed to enunciate, since the story is told musically. A lot was difficult to understand. Also, since Violet is supposed to be horribly disfigured and "ugly," it was jarring to see her played by a lovely actress with no disfiguring stage makeup. Perhaps the point was to show the audience that she was truly lovely on the inside, but the concept fell flat. I expected better from Ford's.

    Violet was poignant and controversial.

by Chalise on 2/23/14Ford's Theatre - Washington

Stage setup was fantastic, some of the sound quality was a bit loud, The actors did a fantastic job, but the story itself was quite controversial. I feel it could have been a bit better with a better audience (group of young students attended this performance, and made it hard to focus.

    Missing the Scar

    by Kingsley2 on 2/23/14Ford's Theatre - Washington

This play would have been much better if Violet had a visible scar. It should have been put on with make up. Without it, it was confusing. The voices were not very good.

Overall an enjoyable experience. The first act was a bit slow at parts, but the second act was great. Good mix of all types of music.
