    Turandot at the Bergen PAC

by ScarletKnight83 on 4/26/18Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

Any production of Turandot is difficult to put on, mostly because of the anticipation and expectations audiences bring with them. This production by Verismo Opera did not disappoint. It’s young cast was delightful, believable and strong. Phillip Alongi was excellent as Calaf and his “Nessun Dorma” was well worth the wait. His portrayal made you feel that Liu would die for him and Turandot’s icy heart would melt. Yulan Piao as Liu won the audiences hearts and showed that she was a worthy winner of the Verismo Opera Competition. Not to be outdone vocally, Zhanna Alkazvova, a previous Verismo Opera Competition winner herself, was perfect as the imperious Turandot. I will be very surprised if these three do not continue to thrill Opera fans for years to come and I for one will always be ready to buy a ticket when they perform. Verismo once again successfully showcased young talent which reminded me that good opera is not only found in big cities.

    Terrific

by LarryKathy on 10/18/17Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

I have been to many operas at Bergen PAC. They have always been outstanding and Tosca was no exception. The performers were all top notch as was the remarkably good orchestra. The comfort and accessibility of the theater helped to make the entire event a relaxing and memorable day.

    Pyramid Scheme

by Khadoor on 4/26/17Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

While the singing was superb, the sets and costumes were so amateur it really harmed the experience. To see an Egyptian priest in black wingtips instead of sandals, a singer staring at the conductor, poorly painted sets and an amateurish ballet company was difficult. The paintings sometimes resembled hieroglyphics but often wildly off.

    Magnificent!

by Grandmasimon on 4/26/17Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

I am not a seasoned opera goer--have seen only a few. But my simple reaction was that it was fabulous, beautiful and memorable. I could not have enjoyed it more and hope to attend other operas at the PAC. The overhead translations were invaluable. Had excellent seats also.

    Rigoletto at Bergen Pac

by ScarletKnight83 on 10/30/16Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

This was the finest performance I've seen by Verismo. The voices, casting, acting...all superb! The ballet was a nice touch, although a bit distracting during one duet. When I saw Jose Heredia was singing the Duke, I exclaimed "Oh, this will be good!" Mr. Heredia did not disappoint and was well up to "Questo e Quello" & "La Donna Mobile". Ashley Bell was a delightful Gilda. Richard Bernstein reminded me that good bassists are like left handed pitchers; hard to fine and you are so lucky when you have one of his caliber. Robert-Heepyoung Ho was a quality Rigoletto. The acting was again a treat, as you could watch Anna Lorraine Tonna's Madalena melt under the Duke's charms. Even minor roles like Silvana Chu's nurse made us swing from laughter to dispair. I believe that if this was your first opera, you probably walked away hooked.

    LarryKathy

As usual Verismo put on a fabulous production, this time of a seldom performed work. The singing, choreography, sets and orchestra were terrific. The theater is very attractive and comfortable and the prices are amazingly low.

    wonderful production;uncomfortable venue

by Anonymous on 5/3/15Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

We enjoyed the Verismo Opera production of Carmen. Wonderful cast - beautiful music. The venue was problematic. The acoustics were not great but, more importantly, the temperature in the theater was very high (warm day but no air conditioning) and the seats are very close together. So we felt crowded in and hot - as though we could not breathe. We hated to do it but we left after the second act. We saw several others leave at the same time.

    Totally enjoyed Carmen !

by skimd on 5/1/15Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

I requested my brother to take me to the first opera I have ever watched for my birthday, and I was not disappointed. Made me want to watch more operas in the near future. Scenes were realistic, costumes were amazing.
