Vashawn Mitchell In Concert
Gospel music is all about communion with a higher power, and some artists need only a moment to take audiences to that elevated place. With his powerful voice and songs of humility, forgiveness, praise, and dedication, Vashawn Mitchell delivers. The Chicago-born, Atlanta-based singer-songwriter-producer-musical director is one of the brightest lights in worship music today.
Along with his own originals — pop-inflected modern gospel hits like "My Worship Is For Real (Believe In Your Dreams)," "Turning Around For Me (Created 4 This)," "Don't Last (Promises)," and the Grammy-nominated "Nobody Greater (Triumphant)" — he's penned and produced songs for talented peers such as Smokie Norful ("Just Can't Stop"), Vanessa Bell Armstrong ("Help") and Bishop Paul S. Morton ("Cry Your Last Tear"). Recording seven albums in a career that's not even two decades old, Mitchell is clearly on a mission.
Mitchell demonstrates his devotion with his most recent release, 2016's ‘My Special Place,' which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Gospel Chart. He recorded the album in South Africa, the country he considers his second home. It's a true collaborative exchange of musical ideas, embracing South African and Afro-Caribbean harmonies and melodies throughout.
Guests include American vocalists BeBe Winans and Tasha Cobbs, as well as South African gospel star Rev. Benjamin Dube on the Zulu worship song "Siyakudumisa." The album's first single — the infectious, poignant "Joy" — has become one of Mitchell's signature tunes.
As ‘My Special Place' makes clear, Mitchell's live performances are high-energy, uplifting celebrations of life under God. On stage he's joined by a band of R&B veterans, who lend a distinctly radio-ready polish to his songs, and a chorus of backing vocalists. Whether he's playing worship houses or concert halls, Mitchell conveys infectious energy and righteous duty, giving everything of himself to both the audience and the Almighty.
