Vanderbilt Commodores at Vanderbilt Stadium

Nashville, Tennessee, is home to one of the most prestigious schools in the South, as well as one of the more competitive programs in the Southeastern Conference: The Vanderbilt Commodores. The Commodores play on campus at Vanderbilt Stadium, which seats 40,550 and originally opened as Dudley Field in 1922 before being almost completely rebuilt in 1981. They are coached by Derek Mason, who has led the Commodores to bowl appearances in 2016 and 2018 after replacing James Franklin before the 2014 season.

Vanderbilt Commodores Football History

Both VU's name and its athletic program's nickname pay tribute to railroad magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt, who made the initial $1 million endowment for the school in 1873. Vanderbilt University first fielded a football team in 1890, and won 11 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association and two Southern Conference titles before joining the SEC as a charter member in 1932. The Commodores were a powerhouse in Southern football in the early 20th century, led by coach Dan McGugin from 1904 to 1917 and from 1919 to 1934. Vanderbilt University is the only private school in the Southeastern Conference, and also has the smallest enrollment, but has held its own on the field and off of it. James Franklin's run as head coach from 2011 to 2013 saw Vanderbilt win nine games in a season twice in a row for the first time in their history, in 2012 and 2013, before Franklin left to become the head coach at Penn State.

Vanderbilt has many fierce rivalries, including fellow SEC East foes Georgia and Kentucky, as well as inter-divisional rival Ole Miss. The Commodores' rivalry against the Tennessee Volunteers dates to 1892, and with victories over the Vols in 2016, 2017 and 2018, Vanderbilt achieved their longest winning streak against UT since the 1920s. Vanderbilt also once had a spirited rivalry against Sewanee, Many notable NFL players have played for the Commodores, including veteran quarterback Jay Cutler, Houston Texans linebacker Zach Cunningham and wide receivers Earl Bennent and Jordan Matthews.

It’s college football but in a high school stadium

by csm0023 on 10/16/18Vanderbilt Univ Vanderbilt Stadium - Nashville

It’s big time SEC football at a bargain price. Nabbed 35 yard line seats at face a week before the game. But too bad Vandy doesn’t support their team. Of course in s stadium with long rest room lines, and concessions run by high schools that run out of food while you stand in line for 20 minutes at halftime, it’s understandable.

    Vanderbuilt Commodores Commonwealth Stadium

by AndyBoland on 9/25/18Vanderbilt Univ Vanderbilt Stadium - Nashville

A great trip! Nashville is a fun city with plenty of entertainment options. The stadium is much smaller than other SEC venues, but also had more adequate concesssions and restroom amenities than most larger ones. Nearby hotels provide the best tailgate options for those travelling.

    Great football team. AWFUL stadium.

by Vandy2018Football on 9/11/18Vanderbilt Univ Vanderbilt Stadium - Nashville

Vanderbilt Football has a great team this season. Very fun to watch. Coach Mason has done and amazing job with all that he’s up against, including an inept AD and a chancellor who doesn’t support the program. However, unless you want to know what it’s like to jump in a time machine and see what going to an SEC football game in the 1960’s was like, you will despise the venue. Seats are uncomfortable. Concessions are a joke. Lines for the bathroom are ridiculous. 89 degrees with humidity for an 11am kickoff and no shade anywhere. I feel sorry for this team because they really are exceeding all expectations for what they are given.

    Vandy vrs. Georgia

by Dawg58 on 10/10/17Vanderbilt Univ Vanderbilt Stadium - Nashville

The Commodores stadium is easy to get to and has plenty of entrance/exit points. The stadium holds just above 40,000 people, so the crowd was not overwhelming and a little short of a sell out. Georgia traveled at least 1/2 the stadium - maybe as much as 70%. The food and pricing was about average in price and quality with other stadiums. The restrooms were reasonably well kept and their personnel around the stadium were friendly and helpful. It is an older venue and while well kept; could use some updating. As far as the game is concerned.. It was great! Georgia won! We were quite happy with the experience.

    Not a good experience

by Volsfanfamily on 11/29/16Vanderbilt Univ Vanderbilt Stadium - Nashville

Our family of 4 attempted to attend this game. We have gone to several games at other venues but this was our first time going to Vanderbilt Stadium. Event staff gave us wrong directions to our seats, twice. When we did find our section, we had a very difficult time getting to our seats (even though we had seats 1-4 in that row). There was band equipment piled up and overcrowding of fans there to watch the game. Two of our family members were unable to climb over the equipment and people to reach our seats. They ended up standing to watch the portion of the game that we stayed for because event staff could not seat us anywhere else. We left shortly after the 1st quarter began. The tickets were a waste of money.

The stadium needs renovating. The concession and bathroom lines were outrageously long. The concession stand worker had to write down my order, she had to swipe my card, she handed my card back and I had to swipe my card on a different machine. It took over 20 minutes to get from the concourse to our seats. The traffic of people is very poorly organized.

    Best early Christmas present!

by vandyfanforlife on 11/29/16Vanderbilt Univ Vanderbilt Stadium - Nashville

This was one of the best Vandy games that I have attended. So exciting to see them beat Tennessee at home! This was my husband's early Christmas present and I couldn't be happier that the Dores brought home the victory for him! Even as we sat surrounded by orange, we proudly wore our black and gold. What a game!
