    A delight!

by Ellip on 4/5/23Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

As in the introduction, this concert made newness not only "accessible" but really turned it into a delight! Thank you to the magical choir, singers and conductor, pianist and composers, for creating this singular multilayered experience! I would love to hear some of it again, somehow, sometime. Perhaps a new CD? Or is there now some form of subscription technology for streaming recaps to recreate the experience? Heh, and that lullaby... it really works! I could shift from day to night effortlessly hearing that! Thus we are like newborns to be deeply soothed by a flow of harmony!

    A FEAST indeed!

by Ellip on 11/30/22Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Never before have we had a chance to hear so many of Vancouver's fine choirs all in one evening, singly and all together, with an immensely varied repertoire, The event was most aptly entitled "feast" yet unlike. a feast of food I was not uncomfortably "stuffed" at the end, rather energized and exhilarated, and ready to book visits to many more events. Thank you to VCC for the vision and the work of creating and serving us this feast for the soul!

by Anonymous on 9/28/15Ryerson United Church - Vancouver

My sister and I were visiting Vancouver for the first time and did not know what to expect. This chamber choir was fabulous! In fact, we are planning to investigate if they tour in the United States (we are from Washington State), and will definitely attend a concert of theirs again if at all possible. The taxi ride from our hotel in North Vancouver was quite expensive, especially since it was round trip, and we were wondering if it would be worth it; I can give a resounding YES!! The church where they performed was lovely, the local people were warm and welcoming, the conductor of the choir was relaxed and entertaining with his remarks. The program was diverse, titled "From Bard to Byrd", and it was a thoroughly professional performance, truly wonderful.

    Beautiful voices

by AListener123 on 3/23/15Ryerson United Church - Vancouver

I enjoy this concert immensely. The conductor's interaction with the listeners was amazing too, it made us feel comfortable and connected to the music. And the beauty of human voice at its best in choral song.....aha.....!

    A Lesson in Conducting Style

by NorthVan on 1/27/15Ryerson United Church - Vancouver

After a week of the choir working with five different conductors plus their own Jon Washburn, we got to see each style in light of how it brought something different out of the sound of the choir. I really would have loved to have had a camera on the conductor (as we could only watch from the back of him/her), but watching the choir take on new responses and sounds with each was interesting to observe. In typical Washburn style, the music was primarily from Canadian composers, so variety wasn't world class. As always, the choir was its marvelously professional self, displaying their own joy of singing on a team to create emotion with sounds. Bravo.

    Strong ending...

by clsmooth2 on 12/30/14Ryerson United Church - Vancouver

We walked in through the doors about 10 minutes late due to the lack of parking at this venue. There is only street parking throughout. When we did arrive the hostess/usher gave us a lecture about being late and then wouldn't let us into the seating area as the choir had already started. I'm sorry, but we're adults and not children and can quietly seat ourselves. She also chased down and dragged an senior citizen back to the lobby who wanted to make her way into the seating area herself! Once finally in, it was good and bad as we hadn't missed any of the Charlie Brown production, however did have to sit through 2 different choirs of, quite frankly, overly religious chamber music. During intermission there was a bit of regret coming to this event, however since tickets were paid for we stayed and the Charlie Brown portion saved the day! It was fun to watch and having live jazz was a nice touch and was what put me over! Would I attend this again? Well, now that I've seen it I'm not sure it'd be much different in the years to come. I also am not sure if I would want that usher/hostess there again as I wouldn't want to deal with such an inconsiderate individual again...

    Great Performance!

by mysonandme on 12/15/14Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

We enjoyed every moment and every detail of this entire event..... the trip "into the city" (can you tell we're small town folk?) was great..... traffic not unreasonable..... parking not too hard to find. Simply observing people at a venue like this is also a real treat.... there are so many different types of people who attend..... such a diverse and seemingly random conglomeration of people! I always wonder what brings them there.... it must be something different for each one. The Orpheum was beautiful and opulent as always, and the whiff of old school sophistication was in the air, making this a special event that we eagerly anticipated for weeks! The performance itself was great..... the orchestra in particular was superb. An absolute pleasure to behold! A performance so clear and pure that it brought tears to my eyes and chills down my spine! The choirs (I understand 2 separate choirs performed together) were terrific. Of particular note: there was an Asian woman in the front row of the choir (alto) who was quite animated and was obviously enjoying every second of the performance. It was great to watch her! The soloists were good. The alto sang accurately, but it seemed without quite enough power to fill the Orpheum. The bass was excellent. Handel's Messiah is one the most magnificent pieces of music ever written and performed. I love all types of music, but if there is one piece that eclipses everything else in my musical world, it would be Messiah.... I have listened to it for 48 of my 48 years (my parents have listened to it since before I was born), and it has become a "part of me"..... Can't wait for next year!

A sublime evening, crowned by Tallis' Lamentations

by max2 on 10/21/14Ryerson United Church - Vancouver

The concert title "High Renaissance" attracted me immediately, as Renaissance polyphony is one of my favourite forms of the choral art. The performance, by the Vancouver Chamber Choir and the FOCUS choir, exceeded all my expectations. Each piece was a jewel in its own right, but without a doubt the crown jewel was Thomas Tallis' "Lamentations of Jeremiah". The other high point for me was Tomas Luis de Victoria's "Magnificat".

    Acoustics were subpar

by JFRDesert on 12/9/13Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

The sound technicians missed the mark for this production. Sat in the sixth row middle and could barely hear the choir and orchestra for the first half of the program. Disappointing for a choir with so much potential.

Vancouver Chamber Choir -- always a treat

by VSOfan on 4/8/12Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Very professional performance, as usual, by the VCC and instrumentalists. Lots of Bach choral music to enjoy.
