About

VAN HALEN IN CONCERT: In their rise stardom, the legendary rockers of Van Halen left an indelible mark on hard rock and heavy metal by challenging conventional notions of what was musically possible. From the hot-wired licks of guitarist Eddie Van Halen to the heart-pounding double bass drumming of his brother Alex, their supercharged sound never fails to excite audiences in concert. And with legendary frontman David Lee Roth bringing his charisma back to the fold, the group has recaptured the same energy that made them a must-see spectacle in the first place. Incendiary hits like “Hot for Teacher” and “Ain’t Talking ‘Bout Love” still sit perfectly beside catchy favorites like “Jump” and “Dance the Night Away”, and ticket buyers can’t help but sing along to all the classics every time Van Halen plays on tour. BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT: Growing up in a musical household, brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen pushed each other to become instrumental virtuosos by their teens. They started playing with dynamic singer David Lee Roth and bassist Marc Anthony in 1974, settling on the eponymous Van Halen moniker later that year. Their self-titled 1978 debut went on to sell over 10 million copies thanks to Eddie’s game-changing guitar playing, Roth’s flamboyant persona, and their undeniably catchy songs. The band became a veritable hard rock institution with their masterstroke album 1984, which contained the number 1 hit “Jump” and helped them crossover from metal to mainstream. Unfortunately, conflicts between Roth and the rest of the band lead to a falling out, and the frontman was replaced by Sammy Hagar. The new Van Halen lineup scored more hits, while Roth concurrently enjoyed a successful solo career. Eventually Hagar split with the group as well, and they briefly hired former Extreme frontman Gary Cherone before announcing a hiatus in 1999. The band reunited with Hagar in 2003 for a reunion tour, but tensions in the band resulted in him leaving again. Tempers between David Lee Roth and the band had cooled by that point, and he rejoined Van Halen in 2006, while Eddie’s son Wolfgang took over on bass. Their fresh lineup still inspires the same pandemonium from their early days, while their 2012 album A Different Kind of Truth (their first record with Roth since 1984) continues to excite fans around the world.

    RIP Eddie

    by J. D. on 10/7/20

What can I say, let me begin with this. In 1979 I was a 16-year-old introvert without many friends. My first car was a 67 Comet. It was a four-door and not cool for a 16-year-old to drive, but it was all I could afford. I installed a Craig 8 track player so I could cruise the local teen hang out & blast out my Van Halen 8 tracks! You, Eddie and your music MADE me feel cool!:) A few years later I got to see you and the band perform live in Mobile Alabama! It was the Diver Down tour. A couple of years after that I drove three hours in my 71 Firebird and saw you and the guys in Biloxi Mississippi for the 1984 tour. Both concerts I saw you in, I could really tell that you truly enjoyed and was blessed to do what you wanted to do. And that my friend, was to make truly inspirational rock music! You changed the landscape of rock as we know it forever! RIP Eddie!

"Eruption" Live at the Hollywood Bowl

by CalGold on 4/8/16Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

This was my 6th time seeing Van Halen- 3 times with Sammy Hagar as the lead singer & now 3 times with David Lee Roth. This was the best show of the 3 with David Lee Roth, making it the 4th best Van Halen show I've seen, behind the 3 shows with Sammy. What made this Dave's best show was that he actually sang & did it in key this time. The previous two times he muddled through the show talking the songs' lyrics, instead of singing them. Another problem with Dave is that he simply talked too much during the songs. If he would've just sung them the way he wrote them, instead of ad-libbing a bunch of extra stuff the show would've been almost as good as a show with Sammy as the front man. I do give credit to Dave comparing Van Halen's fighting between the guitarist & the singer to the same scenario in Bon Jovi. Dave explained the difference in Van Halen is that Dave apologizes every couple of years & remains in Eddie's good graces. Now that was funny. But the best part of tonight's show was Eddie Van Halen of course. Eddie was on his A-game & shredded on his guitar solo- which included the iconic "Eruption" which never sounded better than tonight, live at the Hollywood Bowl. He looked great health wise & smiled all night long. I could tell that he was having a lot of fun reacting to the crowd's cheering who were watching him perform pure magic on his guitar.

VAN HALEN ROCKS THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL

by tainbey on 10/17/15Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

They blew that place apart, the band was tight and they played like the good old days and the audience responded with massive appreciation, now I must say that I am a stage lighting designer/director and had done many lighting gigs with band back in the day, when they broke up my little bother was Roth's ld for his two solo tours as well as the first VH reunion so I was glad I got to see the band rock out more time, later in the week I had the honor of providing lighting for Van Halen Rising book signing/launch party gig in Pasadena, CA, with tribute band Fan Halen and a lot of the old San Gabriel Valley rockers who were in bands back in the day, the original bassist for Van Halen joined the tribute band for a few songs and one of the bands had the little brother of the second bassist from Van Halen, so it was great seeing a lot of the musicians I provided lighting for way back when and the whole night was a stone groove blast, in closing I would just like to say thank you to Van Halen for giving us some of the greatest rock and roll in the history of music and I am happy that I was a part of it, keep rockin...

VH rev. Good in general but with some commentspure

by ManuelG on 10/15/15Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Van Halen was fine, not unforgettable but it was a good concert Regarding the venue it was OK in general, some comments: - Nice venue and atmosphere - Some queues in bars sometimes - Restrooms were OK - Were seated in the benched area and there was some issues with 4 people that were in 2 seats just next to us, they were occupying some of our space and was not comfortable. There should be a better security regarding this

Bucket list checked off for Van Halen. Petty cool to hear what David Lee Roth had to say in general. I liked what he had to say about the song Panama.

    Set Your Expectations, Have Fun

    by Nickname1000 on 10/12/15Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Yes, they are in their 60's (well of course Wolf is the youngster), but they still put on a good, decent show. I go to many of their concerts, and after the show, I hear a bunch of fat, bald guys complaining how Dave is no good. I always say "well look at the source". They rock the venue, are professionals, and sell out all the time. Understand the time we're in, and don't expect them to be jumping around like the 81' tour. When you set your expectations in this reality, get a beer, enjoy the music, you'll have a blast...

    Bucket List Concert Exceeded Expectations

by PabloFunny on 10/9/15Sleep Train Amphitheatre in Chula Vista - Chula Vista

I've loved Van Halen's music, the Roth material, for many years. I'd seen David Lee Roth a few times, solo, and his performances varied in quality from "decent" to "very good." This was the first chance I had to see the "reunited" Van Halen, and I was not disappointed. Dave put maximum effort into his vocals, missing a few lyrics, but hitting all the notes (even some "whistle" shrieks) with power. Eddie played brilliantly, and Al and Wolfgang were a tight unit. The venue was very pleasant. My only complaints, minor they may be, were the rather low-key stage production (no pyro, lasers, etc.), and the wasted money on for the "fast lane" ticket. The ordinary entry lines were actually less crowded. In short, the band I've waited decades to see put on an excellent show, and presented a well-rounded assortment of their many hits.

    Blew me away

by King on 10/8/15Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

They blew me away for many reasons. 1. David's still got it! still doesn't sing that well. But never did. But he did and still does put on one hell of a show! And 2. As a bass player myself for 40 yrs. and counting. Wolfgang was bad ass! His right hand fingers were flying at times. And he had some flurries of runs that I never saw Michael Anthony even attempt. 3. And Eddie genuinely looked like he was having a blast! Played as good as ever! 4. But the best part was how they gave off the appearance of being a family. Wolfgang, dad, Uncle Alex and good ole Uncle Dave. Dave said he spent some of the best times of his life on stage with Eddie. And I believed him. The crowd was great! The sound was great! It was an epic experience. One of the top twenty concerts I've attended. And I've literally been to a few hundred over the last 42 years since high school...
