About

Blending folk, soul, blues, and Appalachian traditional elements into a refreshingly timeless sound that sits outside of any particular musical era, Valerie June stands in a long and storied line of unique Memphis performers, a city with a still vibrant music scene even into the 21st century. The daughter of a brick cleaner from Humboldt in the flatlands of West Tennessee, June took quickly to the various local roots music styles in the area, teaching herself guitar and developing her own mix of it, interpreting traditional material like it was still alive and breathing while also writing her own material with an eye to the influences of passionate and socially minded songwriters like Bob Marley. She officially began performing at the age of 19 as the wife part of the husband-and-wife duo Bella Sun (the couple released an album, No Crystal Stair, in 2004 on their own Bella Sun Music imprint), but when the marriage fell apart, June left the south and began living the life of a gypsy street musician, playing for change in bus and subway stations up and down the West Coast. She eventually returned to Tennessee, settling finally in Memphis, where she slid right into the city's active music scene. By now she had added banjo and lap steel to her musical base, and she began to draw local attention for her powerful performances, becoming a favorite at area folk festivals and workshops. She recorded two albums, The Way of the Weeping Willow and Mountain of Rose Quartz, at legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis, but she really came into the national eye when she was featured, along with rappers Al Kapone and Muck Sticky and other musicians, in $5 Cover, an MTV web series put together by Craig Brewer, the creator of the movie Hustle & Flow, which followed Memphis musicians as they scrambled to pay the rent, fall in and out of love, and yes, play music in one of the most storied musical cities in the world. The series aired early in 2009, giving June and her music a platform for wider exposure. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi

Energetic, Engaging and Eclectic...The three good E's!!

by Dee on 2/19/23Fort Mose State Park - St. Augustine

I didn't know a thing about Valerie June but bought the tickets to hear live music. I found Valerie to be very entertaining, engaging, warm and funny and very positive. Her music was eclectic and her band was very solid and good. Valerie has a nice voice. There was a little issue with the sound system at the concert but overall it was very good.

    Beautiful concert.

by Jslab on 2/19/23Fort Mose State Park - St. Augustine

Valerie June’s performance was amazing as always. This was a small venue at Fort Mose State Park raising money to rebuild the fort. We were fortunate enough to hear the sound check from the board walk hearing Valerie’ amazing voice echo through the trees.

Hearing the music of Valerie June under the stars and trees was magical. I am not exaggerating when I say it was the best concert I have ever been to.

    Disappointed

by Mee on 11/9/22Bethel Woods Center for the Arts - Bethel

Sound system was way too loud, the instruments were overpowering the voice. Her voice seemed muffled. Seats too close touching other people as you sit. Opening band Violet Bell took the show

    Masks Not Required

by COVID Concern on 5/25/22Pantages Theatre - Minneapolis

I read the event was going to require masks, but it was not required and way too many people: no ability to social distance and no area set aside for people who wanted to mask. This at least would have been a way to enjoy the concert more.

Valerie June - A special night!

by JD on 5/25/22Delmar Hall - Saint Louis

Sunday night May 22nd at the Delmar Concert Hall will go down as one of my favorite concerts of all times. Ms. June shared all of her talents. Singing, dancing, and one hell of a picker. Oh what a special voice! No one else to compare too. I think Valerie showed us her love of performing and gave us 100 percent. I love how she talks to the audience between songs. It helped me connect with her story. I'm really surprised that Valerie June is not playing at sold out larger venues. Thanks Valerie.
