    Bittersweet memories and great music

by Englishgirl007 on 12/16/10The Music Box - Hollywood

Joy Division have been one of my favourite bands for the last 30 years; and they were a really formative part of my musical development. Hearing these songs live again after so long was a wonderful and evocative experience. Peter Hook isn't a great singer, but it was obvious that he was as impassioned about the lyrics now, as Ian Curtis had been originally. The set opened with old footage of the band, early interviews, and clips from "24 Hour Party People" woven through. Remembering the Hacienda, seeing a young Curtis performing on TOTP, all helped to create the mood. Perry Farrell performed "Transmission", and was great...if you have the chance to catch any other shows on this tour, I'd recommend it.

Peter pulled it off, nice job

by CaryGrant on 12/15/10The Music Box - Hollywood

Solid muscianship. Peters vocals were good but he never admitted to be Ian, Perry came out and sang on transmission! I enjoyed myself. Thanks for the concert Peter and I loved that your son was with you on stage.this was as close to seeing an Joy Division concert as I'm ever going to see so I'm happy.

    Hooky!

by Vale46 on 12/15/10The Music Box - Hollywood

Incredible show, never thought I'd ever get to hear these songs live. Starting with some early Warsaw songs was great. Hooky and his son were both bass maestros.

    Historic

by RawGutz on 12/15/10The Music Box - Hollywood

Listening to Unknown Pleasures, albeit without all the original members of Joy Division, was somewhat of a dream come true. Peter Hook did a good job of invoking the past and the band followed suit. The sound was incredible. I watched from the lower level in different spots and the sound was always even. I usually carry earplugs just in case the venue's sound is too high and the ear plugs help EQ the sound. They were unnecessary at the Music Box. The Music Box got a face lift a few months ago and it looks great. Awesome show.

    Amazing night

    by passenger57 on 12/14/10Music Box - Hollywood

Like alot of the 20 somethings dancing the night away in the audience I'm new to Joy Division. So there is no nostalgia for me whatsoever. Just great timeless music. You take JD's songs, image and style and they will fit into any era of music - it's wonderful, it's relevant it's modern. People who say dinosaur rock make me laugh. JD is timeless. One thing I noticed on youtube was that JD live was very heavy and big. Peter Hook recaptured some of that spirit and energy at this show. It was wonderful to see one of the creators of that band bring the music to the US finally! It's just that simple for me. So whenever people complain here in the reviews I laugh - just be thankful that a band like JD existed and that there are still people holding the torch for future generations. If it wasn't for Peter Hook JD probably would have never existed especially that high bass signature sound. So be thankful! And I loved his mohawk! Peter you rock! Don't listen to the naysayers, your music will outlast them all!

Well for starters I went into this show with low expectations. I thought Joy Division songs couldn't possibly sound the same without Ian Curtis. Suprisingly, Peter Hook did a fantastic job being front man for almost all the songs, yes i said almost all. I'm sure it would be an entirely different experience if it were Curtis. The only reason I am not giving this show five stars is because it wasn't Curtis. The atmosphere was great. It was my first trip to the musc box. The music wasn't overbearingly loud nor too quiet. The venue was spacious enough so my claustrophobia didn't kick in. There is a nice rooftop area with a great view to take a minute to catch a breath between acts. The set list was great. A steady hour and a half of all Joy Division songs. I wasn't sure if Hook was going to throw in some New Order songs as well, which I wouldn't have knocked. Just when you think the show couldn't get any better they came out for their encore and started playing "Transmission." I figured they couldn't play a show without this song on the list. The best part about it was while playing the intro to the song Hook informed the crowd that his dear friend Perry Farrell was going to be singing "Transmission." After watching Farrell perform I couldn't think of anybody else to take the place as lead singer for that song, other than Curtis. He had soooooo much energy and was all over the stage bringing the crowd even more into the show. At one point I could feel the whole floor literally bouncing up and down with the jumping of the crowd. They played two more songs and left the stage. However, they returned for a second encore. I haven't been to many shows that this has happened. So, few I couldn't tell you one right now off the top of my head. Great show! If you missed out then thats too bad it was superb.
