University of Texas Longhorns Men's Basketball History

The University of Texas Longhorns men’s basketball team launched in 1906 and spent its initial years as an independent program until forming the Southwest Conference for the 1914–15 season. After logging a 22-1 record under coach Ed Olle, the Longhorns retroactively won their sole National Championship in 1933, as determined by the Premo-Porretta Power Poll. Texas later helped create the Big 12 Conference ahead of the 1996-97 season, and will remain a member until moving to the Southeastern Conference in 2024.

The Longhorns have made 37 tournament appearances and reached the Final Four three times in 1943, 1947 and 2003. Texas has made all but four NCAA Tournaments since 1999. In the Big 12, Texas has led the regular season conference title three times, and won the conference tournament in 2021 and 2023. The Longhorns are currently under the leadership of Rodney Terry.

Notable Texas alumni include Kevin Durant, LaMarcus Aldridge, D.J. Augustin, T.J. Ford, Royal Ivey, P.J. Tucker, Jarett Allen and Avery Bradley, who have all continued on to lengthy pro careers. Durant was named Naismith Player of the Year in 2007.

    Great Arena & Staff

by HornFan on 12/11/19Dickies Arena - Fort Worth

We went to the UT vs A&M basketball game at Dickies Arena. The venue was great - parking garage very convenient, good food & drink choices, most seats were close to the court, free WiFi, and the staff was so friendly. We had a great time.

    Exciting Matchup

by RBLH on 12/12/12Reliant Stadium - Houston

Both games were fun to watch. Unfortunately, the ladies game was lopsided but both programs have a lot of potential. Getting to see two games at one event between two good programs was a lot of fun.

I expected a better turn out than the amount of who attended. However, I also think the setup made the amount of patrons who attended look even less.

    Texas b-ball

by Whatdoyouwantmetocallme on 12/10/12Reliant Stadium - Houston

The event organizers created a very intimate atmosphere for basketball inside Reliant Stadium. Although the gathered crowd was small, the fans that were there were passionate about the game.

Took my little sister who loves Bball and hopes to play for a big school when she goes to college. She had a great time as this was her first college bball game. It was great to be able to watch both the Women's and Men's teams!
