About

Maryland Terrapins at Maryland Stadium

College Park, Maryland, is home to the Old Line State's premiere college football program, and to one of the Big Ten Conference's newest teams. The Terrapins play at Maryland Stadium, which opened in 1950 and has a current capacity of 51,802. Their coach is Mike Locksley, who previously led the University of New Mexico Lobos from 2009 to 2011, and was Maryland's interim head coach after the dismissal of Randy Edsall in 2015 and the dismissal of D.J. Durkin in 2018.

Maryland Terrapins Football History

Football at the University of Maryland dates back to 1891, when what was known until 1916 as Maryland Agricultural College fielded their first team. Much of the school's current identity (including the "Terrapins" nickname) was molded by Harry C. "Curley" Byrd, who coached the football team from 1911 to 1934, and was the school's president from 1936 to 1954. Two football stadiums were named in Byrd's honor, but Maryland Stadium was renamed in 2015 due to concerns regarding Byrd's segregationist past. In 1945, Paul "Bear" Bryant led Maryland for one season, before leaving for the University of Kentucky. The Terrapins reached the pinnacle of their success under Jim Tatum in the early ‘50s, going undefeated in 1951, and following it up with a national title and the first championship in the newly formed Atlantic Coast Conference in 1953. The Terps won nine ACC championships under Tatum, Jerry Claiborne, Bobby Ross and Ralph Friedgen before joining the Big Ten along with Rutgers for the 2014 season.

While Maryland has had rivalries against West Virginia, Navy and Virginia, their primary rival in the Big Ten is Penn State, who has historically competed with Maryland for recruits. Notable Terrapins to have played in the NFL include Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Stan Jones, fellow Hall of Famer and Super Bowl XII co-MVP Randy White, and Super Bowl XXXV MVP Jermaine Lewis. Many Maryland quarterbacks have gone on to the NFL including Stan Gelbaugh, Neil O'Donnell and Frank Reich, who led the Terps to a stunning 28-point comeback against Miami during the 1984 season, before leading the largest single-game comeback in NFL history with the Buffalo Bills in 1993.

    Seats moved Hott and miserable

    by CRN12 on 9/4/18FedExField - Landover

We originally purchased tickets in a section where there would be no sun. Unfortunately our seats were moved and the only option was to see the game or don’t. So we went, and we were in the HOT sun all day. My husband said he wasn’t even that hot during deployments. Our only souvenir besides getting to our car away from the sun was the nice sunburns that were gained due to our seats being moved. Oh.. and they moved us to enemy territory, so we were a spot of red in a bunch or orange.

    Fedex was good

by Bearonunicycle on 9/4/18FedExField - Landover

Parking and leaving was excellent. Plenty of knowledgeable staff to help you everywhere. Sound system was terrible. I could not understand Ref calls at all. Most of the time I didn’t know what was going on the field.

Game was great. Sound system was terrible.

Seats were great. The only major inconvenience is that the sound system is TERRIBLE in the club level. We were unable to hear the stadium announcer and the referee due to the muffled noise.

    Great atmosphere and venue!

by DCFans on 10/28/15M&T Bank Stadium - Baltimore

So much better then playing in College Park. Easy to get to right off highway, plenty of tailgate lots and a whole city to go out in afterwards! Oh and the game experience inside M&T is great as well….

    Not enough beer or bathrooms

by PSUCollegeFan on 10/27/15M&T Bank Stadium - Baltimore

They needed way more portable bathrooms in the parking lots. The parking was very disorganized and they routed many cars right into the very long lines of people waiting to use the very few bathrooms. The dullard employees that were working did their best impression of a mall rental cop. Instead of organizing the parking situation or helping people find bathrooms, they hid and tried to catch people urinating in corners where no one could see. On the inside of the stadium the bathroom lines were just as long and the stadium ran out of every kind of beer except Bud. Bud is terrible and only garbage people drink it.

MD Terrapins Vs Penn State Nittany Lions Football

by Howdyp on 10/27/15M&T Bank Stadium - Baltimore

The stadium was great but the game was laden with one mistake after another. Fumbles, penalties and drive killing dropped passes were plenty on both sides of the ball. MD dared PSU to throw the ball by stacking the line to stop the running game. Fortunately, Hackenberg had a great throwing game in his bag of tricks for this week and threw one big pass after another. His three best receivers didn't let him down and caught nearly everything tossed in their direction 30-40 yards downfield! Hack had his best game yet and took possession of the all time passing yds.record at Penn State. Both teams scoring into the 30's did keep the game interesting enough for both team's fans right down to the last two minutes. A one point difference during the last three or four minutes of the game kept everyone on the edge of their seat. A very exciting last minute and a half saw the Lions make an Interception to stop Md's final winning scoring drive as time was running out and allowed PSU to run out the clock and take a ":W" home with them. Unlike last year's, this game belonged to Happy Valley as it has been for all but three of 38 years.
