Ultima Vez - still a stunning company
by ExModernDancer on 3/18/13Royce Hall - UCLA - Los AngelesUltima Vez brought their reprise of the original show, What the Body Does Not Remember and it still has all the power to impress and astonish that it had the first time around. I saw this show when I was still dancing and I remember being blown away by the sheer physicality of the dancers, the jaw-dropping poetics of the visuals and the incredible capacity to create visual puns of the choreographer. This is one of the most evocative pieces ever created. Part of what makes it compelling is that many of the original performers, and I presume the present cast, had no formal dance training: only a virtuosic capacity for sheer kinetic exuberance. That makes the piece feel completely accessible for dancers and non-dancers alike. It has a quotidian vocabulary in an utterly imaginative world. Not to be missed.
