Ultima Vez - still a stunning company

by ExModernDancer on 3/18/13Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

Ultima Vez brought their reprise of the original show, What the Body Does Not Remember and it still has all the power to impress and astonish that it had the first time around. I saw this show when I was still dancing and I remember being blown away by the sheer physicality of the dancers, the jaw-dropping poetics of the visuals and the incredible capacity to create visual puns of the choreographer. This is one of the most evocative pieces ever created. Part of what makes it compelling is that many of the original performers, and I presume the present cast, had no formal dance training: only a virtuosic capacity for sheer kinetic exuberance. That makes the piece feel completely accessible for dancers and non-dancers alike. It has a quotidian vocabulary in an utterly imaginative world. Not to be missed.

    Seriously?

by Ballarina on 3/18/13Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

So disappointed. No choreography whatsoever and not funny. Dancers were excellent but this show is a waste of time.

    Not worth the money!

by NotDance on 3/17/13Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

Expected to see a modern dance performance. Instead saw a frightful, odd, pounding, violated collection of movements performed to hand beating and unsettleing musical pieces. The only interesting piece was with colorful towels that was well choreographed. Very few of the pieces involved any kind of dance but a lot of running, throwing, and tantrum like movements. I understand why there was no intermission... They knew no one would return to see the rest.

    As Fresh As Ever

by Jaures on 3/17/13Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

The 2013 production of "Ultima Vez: What the Body Does Not Remember" contains the kind of breath-takingly beautiful moments that we recall for the rest of our lives. There is a segment of the dance where three pairs on the stage struggle to be tender--but never quite manage to caress--and struggle to be aggressive--but never quite dare to hit. Thrilling.
