About

Tony Bennett, born Anthony Dominick Benedetto in Queens, New York in 1926, is one of the most popular crooners in history, having sold over 50 million records worldwide and won 17 Grammy Awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. He started singing at an early age and fought in Europe during WWII before returning stateside. Bennett played concerts with Bob Hope in 1949 and released two No. 1 singles in 1951, Because of You and Cold, Cold Heart. He put out fourteen albums between 1951 and 1961, as well as the 1953 single Rags to Riches that reached No. 1, before the release of his platinum selling 1962 album I Left My Heart in San Francisco. A string of commercially unsuccessful albums in the late 1960s and 1970s followed during the rise of rock and roll, but Bennett returned to form with The Art of Excellence in 1986, and saw a reintroduction of his musical style to younger generations in the 1990s. He released the gold albums Perfectly Frank in 1992 and Steppin’ Out in 1993, and won the Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance with 1994’s MTV Unplugged: Tony Bennett, selling over one million copies. 1996’s Duets: An American Classic and 2011’s Duets II also became platinum selling successes. With no signs of slowing down, Bennett continues to record and tour, playing for ticket holders in the U.S. throughout 2013 and 2014.

    An unforgettable night!

by Valerie on 8/15/21Radio City Music Hall - New York

It was a night to remember forever! Between the two of them, Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga played some of my personal favorite jazz standards. Each one of them had me in tears at different times of the show. When Lady Gaga dedicated "What a Difference a Day Makes" to healthcare workers, there was a steady stream of tears rolling down my face. (I'm a nurse who lives and works in NYC who endured the COVID peak early on.) Tony's renditions of "Smile" & "When You're Smiling" also brought on the waterworks for me. When they announced a week later that all of his other shows had been cancelled, then it really sank in that "One Last Time" at Radio City truly was the swan song of an AMAZING career and I was lucky to be there! Thank you Tony & Lady Gaga for being has friend and worthy musical partner for that special night!

    Beautiful, Wow, What a Night.

by Sara on 8/15/21Radio City Music Hall - New York

This event was everything I anticipated and more. Lady's performance was a true jazz experience and a perfect opening to Tony's set. Lady's energy and vocals brought us through several strong emotions- there was laughter and tears, dancing and stillness, joy and sadness. Tony's gravitas was unshakable as he delivered note after note of strong vocals, receiving a standing ovation for every song. Their duets were energetic and joyful. The accompanying musicians were all phenomenal and added depth to the event. Tony's final song brought everyone to tears and Lady's request to escort him off the stage for the final time brought sobs to our throats. A truly unforgettable night.

    A night to remember

by bae on 8/12/21Radio City Music Hall - New York

Gaga and Tony are an unexpected powerful duo. The love that poured out of Gaga while she spoke about him, captivated the whole audience in awe. Tony had a great stage presence and voice of the young age of 95! He got standing ovations after every song he performed, solo and duet with gaga, as he rightfully should! It was all in all, an incredible, unforgettable evening with two NYC legends.

    a once in a lifetime..

by S. S. on 8/9/21Radio City Music Hall - New York

I saw Tony perform at the Rochester International Jazz festival a few years back. He could belt i out then and at 95 years old he can still belt it out! I have always loved Tony. He's the last of the greats left! I have never seen Lady Gaga perform, but I know of her music, love her songs, her film and television work as well. She dressed in style of flare and taste. They both put on a fabulous show. I loved how Gaga gave so much encouragement to Tony for this performance that not only gave him so much joy it also enveloped the audience with the same joyness. It was a once in a lifetime experience for me and was my way to treat myself as a celebration for my 13 months of sobriety. The audience was filled with so much energy and left me feeling so happy. It's an experience i will never forget and will always cherish!!

“Wow” Tony - One last Time!

by New Yorker for 40 years! on 8/9/21Radio City Music Hall - New York

Tony Bennett celebrated his 95th birthday in front of a sold out Radio city music hall audience of adoring fans. Lady Gaga led the parade with her characteristic vocal stylings setting the tone with classics by Cole Porter, Gershwin and so much more. Bennett, sounding strong and optimistic, seemed genuinely touched by the repeated standing ovations. He had a set of short and snappy tunes before doing a series of duets with Gaga and the amazing band & musicians assembled there. The solo encore was a classic Bennett favorite: I left my heart in San Francisco. Indeed Tony you have profoundly touched us all - be it in San Francisco, in Paris or as a finale in New York. Thank you Tony Bennett for showing us all what the classiest vocalist alive today does to retire.

    Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett

by kait04 on 8/8/21Radio City Music Hall - New York

The show was phenomenal as expected. The venue is just perfect. Slow to get drinks and merch, but not much to fix in these areas seeing as the music hall just doesn’t have space for other vendors to set up. As always, I bought my tickets during a presale for MUCH higher than others that were able to get tickets just minutes before myself.

    Standing O for Tony B.

by Teffer on 8/8/21Radio City Music Hall - New York

THE FIX WAS IN….TONY WON THE NIGHT! New York, New York Picture 6000 people surrendering the use of their IPhones in exchange to bare witness to a major theft in Midtown. Tony Bennet stole everybody’s heart, and we aided and abetted! Guilty as charged. The unique absence of iPhones placed everyone back in time, when Cole Porter and the Gershwin’s ruled without distraction. A full house without a single nascent light distracting another audience member. Likewise, no one realized that the show started 35 minutes late, not because we had no phone to tell time, but because everyone was captured in that timeless pastime of conversation. Only when the applause started from orchestra house left and surged Radio City like an acoustic wave did everyone realize President Clinton was being ushered in. The walk to his Row 3 seat captured everyone and crescendoed when he turned and waved to a full house. Not a camera to be found! Curtain up, and a 40 piece orchestra shared the stage with Lady Gaga’s combo of accompanists. Stage left & right and the slightly lowered orchestra pit were staged with multiple cocktail tables with audience members creating the night-club motif. Gaga’s opening half often referenced stories of her career and the influence and confidence that Tony Bennet had instilled in her ability to sing jazz and the classics from the American Songbook. Her opening act closed with her acknowledgment of finding herself where she had always been, New York, New York. I’m not sure you can witness better audience participation than when that song is sung/played in its hometown. It starts with a standing ovation and only builds from there as Gaga don’s a top hat for the reprise! Curtain down! With the lapse of just a few minutes, the sound system reproduces a recording of Frank Sinatra introducing what was undoubtedly a young Tony Bennet and with generous applause that builds to a standing ovation once the curtain clears to exhibit Tony standing at the side of the Piano, the place he would remain throughout the act with seldom a hand removed from that instrument providing melody and safety. It was at that point that we all knew what had to be done. Every song was ended to the applause of 6000 standing in ovation. Even the President was often first to his feet to ensure we followed this new rule. It was Tony’s night, and we were there to thank him not for singing it tonight, but singing it for us for our lifetime. The Orchestra conductor deferred to Tony’s personal pianist for timing cues and the intro into the series of hits Tony sang. The pianist was challenged by not wanting to limit the crowds ovation but one could sense he knew that Tony’s standing endurance could ill afford the stretching of the set. Tony had moments of strong inflection that was always greeted with bursts of applause. While occasionally the fullness of his voice was lost or the sustained note slipped in pitch it was only something our ears detected, in our hearts, it sounded perfect. Yep, you realized that when Lady Gaga led the audience in Happy Birthday we were witnessing a career close to conclusion but 6000 of us just didn’t want to let on. A return of Gaga to finally join Tony created that opportunity to hear many of their classic duets. She too understood it was his night, lowering her ego to fit the mood and could not have been more generous. As the final curtain closed and a few inexperienced fans started to leave, most of us knew there was more. Where was “San Francisco”? It was the encore with Gaga off stage…and Tony selling his signature song. Ending to the roar of a standing ovation Gaga appears in time to rescue Tony. You see, he will need help off stage, and as a couple it looks deliberate. The night was over….we witnessed history….and the Lion can go to his rest.
