The Birchmere is an awesome venue for that intimate setting. The guy's that played seemed to have known each other for years and had a great time jamming out, playing Danny's songs and songs he loved to listen to. I hope they continue to have a birthday tribute to Danny Gatton! You guys rock!
We really loved the show! I 'm so glad Dave Chappell got this going and everyone on the stage wanted to be a part of honoring Danny Gatton's birthday. It was a great show!
I'll admit we were already Bill Kirchen fans and that's the main reason we bought tickets. But we learned that Tom Principato was something of a local legend and fierce guitarist, heard some recordings and thought it would be a fun introduction (we've heard lots of new-to-us musicians at The Birchmere, most of which were the opening acts). Bill Kirchen and his two co-horts (Too Much Fun) were amazing -- an incredible amount of fantastic new and old music coming from 3 musicians. Bill's great personality and energy are totally uplifting and smile-inducing. After that start to the evening, the rest was frankly a disappointment and we left early. Principato had NINE musicians on stage in a relatively small venue, including 3 horns!!! While his guitar-playing was impressive, it was all too much, too loud, too long for that venue. We hardly ever leave any event early, but we didn't want to lose the Bill Kirchen high.
The combination of Kirchen and Pricipato was unbelieveable. Bill Kirchen is a true entertianer and interacted well with the croud during and after the concert. Tom Pricipato is one of the best blues guitar artists in the area. He got carried away with the solos once or twice but there is no denying his tremendous tallent.
Bill Kirchen is just great. I could listen to him all night. Principato is a good musician but his guitar is so high pitched it assaults the ears at times and he drowns out the other instruments. His drummers and conga players are excellent.
We were so fortunate to have both on the billing. It was like a two for one.
