About

THUNDERCAT IN CONCERT:

Genre-spanning bassist, singer, and producer Thundercat is known for keeping audiences on their toes with his head-spinning variety and eclecticism. From skittering fusion and squelching funk to synth-laden electro, one thing remains constant in his music -- his virtuosic bass playing. He's a true master of the instrument and it provides the backbone for his diverse sound, tying songs like "Oh Sheit It's X" and "Walkin'" together despite their markedly different vibes. In 2014 Thundercat provided tour support to his longtime collaborator Flying Lotus, and his stellar performances and futuristic stage wear on the road proved he's as impressive in concert as he is in the studio.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Los Angeles-born multi-talent Thundercat, a.k.a Stephen Bruner, fell in love with bass at an early age. In his teens he became the bassist of iconic LA thrash band Suicidal Tendencies, whose lineup also included his brother Ronald Jr. on drums. By the mid-'00s he was a sought-after session player, appearing on acclaimed albums by Erykah Badu and his Brainfeeder label mate Flying Lotus. Bruner made his solo debut as Thundercat in 2011 with the album The Golden Age of Apocalypse, a kaleidoscopic slice of bass-heavy fusion and electro that was a huge critical success. Following buzzworthy appearances at festivals like Coachella and Austin City Limits, he released his 2013 sophomore album Apocalypse to another round of critical praise.  A seasoned performer known for his mean bass playing and outré stagewear, Thundercat continues to get ticket buyers moving and shaking on his must-see tours.

    Cool venue, dissatisfied with performance

by Heather on 10/31/23Aztec Theatre - San Antonio

I wanna start by saying we absolutely love Thundercat. However, this was more of a jam sesh than an actual concert. It was a grueling 5 hours long, at least 3 of that was him just telling jokes and playing around riffing his bass. It was extremely overstimulating and he only played like 5 actual songs the entire night. We left and did not buy any merch because we were so butthurt about it.

    Worst Concert Possibly Ever

by Liv on 10/31/23Aztec Theatre - San Antonio

We left by the third song. The opener was actually good - just a DJ playing basic house music. Then thundercat came out …. so so bad. We kept thinking maybe it’s a joke and it’ll end soon and he’ll actually play his music for real. Nope - don’t waste your money or time. It sounded like you let toddlers loose in a room full of instruments. Actually, listening to that might actually be better even. I’m not exaggerating. Worst show I have ever been to.

Fantastic concert needs a better venue

by Amw on 10/31/23Aztec Theatre - San Antonio

DJ Bad Apple rocked it and Thundercat sounded like he was created by musical Gods. The venue needs an update. Not enough room drinks were warm, bathrooms smelled of mildew.

    Fabulous

by Kurage on 10/30/23South Side Ballroom - Dallas

He is absolutely real musician. I love his works, songs and base-guitar play. Percussionists were awesome too. I was very happy and emotional that I felt like I was able to listen to professor Ryuich Sakamoto played with him live thru a message for Austin. And I’m so glad to be there with my boyfriend. Thundercat gave us lots of positive energy!!
