    Moving performance

by Margie on 2/5/20Centennial Hall - Tucson

Thomas Hampson is one of my favorite artists, and this was the first time I've been able to see him on stage . . I was WOW'd! His American Songbook program brought together an impressive group of musicians and an inspiring musical narrative of our shared American experience. In his beautiful baritone voice he delivered an important message of hope for our troubled times .

    Strange event

by Ginny on 2/3/20Centennial Hall - Tucson

Thomas Hampson is indeed a great singer and we looked forward to hearing him. His voice did not disappoint, but the concert did. The venue was too large; it should have been in an intimate recital hall, and while the verbal anecdotes about figures in American history were somewhat interesting, most of the songs were fairly obscure. It may have helped to create a chronological timeline of events around the songs so that it built to something significant. As it was, it all felt random, and there wasn't much variety in his musical choices. Kudos to the violinist and cellist, who were excellent!

More an educational experience than a musical one

by John J on 1/31/20Centennial Hall - Tucson

The engaging Thomas Hampson made his reputation as a "lyric baritone," but always as a serious artist. here, he personably presents some American history of song with mostly forgettable and unchallenging pieces of music and generally interesting commentary, but only two songs in this roughly 90 minutes of presentation revealed anything of his musical artistry. Interesting history; boring music.

    Hampson-Clague Lecture Recital

by BiknAllan on 7/6/14Library of Congress - Washington

Outstanding. A one-in-a-lifetime experience. In over 50 years of attending Coolidge Auditorium performances, I have never seen such an enthusiastic singing audience.

too much of a good thing

by jadcoc on 7/6/14Library of Congress - Washington

The material, mostly 19th Century songs, was pleasant enough. But as the performance headed deep into its second intermissionless hour, people started to stream up the aisles. Much of the commentary was witty, some of out was pedantic. All in all, it added up to too much information piled on top of two much sometimes-not-very-interesting music.

Perfect Concert to Begin the July 4 Holiday!

by FairfaxPete on 7/6/14Library of Congress - Washington

Hard to imagine a better way to celebrate Independence Day than this excellent (and at the same time educational) concert. Just hearing one of America's best singers sing the National Anthem was reason enough to attend, but there was much more on the program including the original "Anacreon in Heaven," the source music for the anthem. Hampson was, as usual, in fine form both singing and commenting on the songs. He was joined in commentary by Mark Clague, a musicologist from the Univ. of Michigan, and a fine male choral group comprised of Univ. of Michigan alumni allowed an version of the anthem to be presented as it would have been heard early in its nearly 200 year history. Also included were a couple of parody versions of the anthem, some other patriotic music, and a recent piece commissioned for Hampson. Altogether a stirring event perfect for the national holiday!

    Thomas Hampson is amazing!

by umgawa on 10/7/09Newmark Theatre - Portland

Thomas Hampson commands the stage! He is passionate about the American Song Project and that comes through when he sings. From the full booming baritone to the barest whisper of his falsetto, he was in total control. The songs were by turn funny, poignant, somber, and even heartbreaking. I was thrilled to see how far he had come since our college days! I hope he comes back to Portland more often.

Couldn't have asked for a better performer for such a fascinating collection of material.
