About

THE TAMS IN CONCERT:

More than 50 years after their first hit, legendary vocal R&B group The Tams continues to enthrall and inspire with their smooth vocals and razor-sharp harmonies. The band has weathered the passing of several members over the years with true professionalism, never losing their signature sound -- or classic dapper style -- while recruiting new talent to fill the empty shoes. Founding member Robert Lee Smith remains as impressive as ever at the group's live shows, delivering nostalgic favorites like "Hey Girl Don't Bother Me" to "There Ain't Nothing Like Shaggin'" with an energy and charisma that always leaves ticket buyers wanting more.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

The Tams formed in Atlanta in 1960, taking their name from the trademark Tam o' Shanter caps they donned on stage. They scored their first hit in 1962 with "Untie Me", a Top 20 R&B success that paved the way for a string of popular singles released throughout the decade. Their chart success in the US continued with hits like "I've Been Hurt" (1965) and "Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy" (1868), but their biggest triumph came overseas when the 1971 re-release of their single "Hey Girl Don't Bother Me" topped the UK Singles Chart. It was another 16 years before they appeared on the charts again with their 1987 UK hit single "There Ain't Nothing Like Shaggin'". A classic act with a timeless sound, The Tams continue to enjoy considerable popularity, thrilling their devoted fans every time they hit the road on tour.

    High Energy!

by D Dub on 10/25/23The Charleston Music Hall - Charleston

A must-see for any beach music fan! Lil Redd's gravelly voice is a carbon copy of his dad's. This made for perfect renditions of "What Kind of Fool", "Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy', "Laugh It Off", "Untie Me", "I've Been Hurt"and "Too Much Foolin' Around". They also covered other R&B/Beach songs with aplomb, including "Love Train"and "Carolina Girls". Redd and his son traded dance moves several times and took turns doing mid-air splits. It was high energy for 90 minutes...no sleepy ballads, no intermission. Just nothing but the hits and pure delight for their fans. Afterwards they came out to the lobby, took photos and signed autographs. Note to similar older acts: you could learn a few things from these guys!

    AWESOME ENTERTAINMENT

by Babs on 10/25/23The Charleston Music Hall - Charleston

The Tams concert was absolutely FABULOUS!! Not only was the singing great, but the energy and personality of the group was incredible!! LOVED every minute of it! The dancing skills of the lead singer (and his young son) were AMAZING!! Those songs make you dance, even when sitting in your seat! Thoroughly enjoyed it! It was definitely one of my best birthday celebrations ever!!

The Drifters were more entertaining and pleasant to watch and listen to. The TAMS songs went on too long the on stage singers did not change their routine and it was very tiring to watch as the lead singer was out in the audience jumping around and screaming. the opening group was better than the Tams.

    The Tams were amazing!!!

by lovesbeachmusic on 10/23/13Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium - Spartanburg

This was a good concert overall. The Party Prophets were very good! Enjoyed them alot. The Drifters.....well, these guys just need to go ahead and retire. They just did not have it together. There were two of them that could still carry a tune but I wouldn't recommend a show of just them. NOW THE TAMS.......THEY WERE GREAT!!! There was more energy in that show than I have ever seen in a group. They had their stuff together!!! Go see them, they are worth the money. I'm waiting on them to come back, so I can see them again.
