About

THE PIMPS OF JOYTIME IN CONCERT:

The best part of seeing The Pimps Of Joytime in concert is that you never know what to expect. The Brooklyn-based quintet doesn't confine themselves to just one or even two genres -- anything is fair game, meaning ticket buyers are in for surprising, rollicking spectacles. Even the band's stellar recordings don't fully convey their soulful, funky energy -- this is music that's meant to be experienced live. Whether they're making the floors shake with the hip-hop-infused "Janxta Funk", shaking their hips to the mambo-influenced "Bonita", or sparking dance-offs with the groovy club anthem "Booty Text", The Pimps Of Joytime pack personality and passion into each of their shows, leaving crowds grooving all night long.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

In 2007 singer Brian J recruited a diverse band of musicians from Brooklyn and New Orleans to form a genre-defying supergroup influenced by acts like Santana and Parliament Funkadelic. They dubbed themselves The Pimps Of Joytime and began creating a wildly varied catalog that combines soul, funk, rock, blues, reggae, dub, and salsa. The band is known for their extensive touring, typically playing more than 100 shows a year including major festivals like Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, High Sierra, and All Good. Since its inception, the group has had a rotating lineup of drummers and bass players, but Brian J and vocalists Chauncey Yearwood and Mayteana Morales remain the three core members. In total the band has released three studio albums -- 2008's High Steppin', 2011's Janxta Funk!, and 2014's Jukebox Paradise -- building a rich collection of danceable tunes that come to life at their thrilling live performances.

    Great night of funk

by Fifusweater on 11/10/15Teragram Ballroom - Los Angeles

Pimps of Joytime put on an entertaining show, mostly funky and bordering on trance-y at times. They have a great rhythm section, with a super-tight drummer and a Sheila E-style conga player who occasionally transitioned into some tribal grooves. A few songs made it obvious that they were playing to a track with some instrumentalists who clearly weren't on stage, but maybe that's just their stripped-down touring lineup (they're originally from Brooklyn, NY). However the opening act, Con Brio, was every bit as good and entirely live. Con Brio put on a nonstop dance-funk groove, fronted by a lead singer who's the second coming of Michael Jackson. Definitely try to catch these guys if you can.

    PJT in SF Tunnafun

by AllTimeJBB on 11/3/14The Fillmore - San Francisco

Solid fun show, really great crowd. Halloween craziness. Compared to when I saw them last year, PJT added more rock and EDM elements to their range of sound, which is probably a good thing to keep the sound fresh and diverse as they keep moving forward. But, PJT is at their very best when they bring da funk, which they did in SF no doubt, so I hope they never leave that as their core.
