    Trouble Man

by CCanada on 8/18/12Black Ensemble Theater Cultural Center - Chicago

My boyfriend and I thought the play was very good. I loved the music choices. Thought Ms. Taylor did a fine job telling Marvin Gaye's story. Took me back to my grammar and high school days. The actor who played Marvin Gaye really surprised me. I did not think (looking at his pic in the stage bill) he could pull it off, however, he did. I thought everyone did a fantastic job playing their roles. Theater is not that big...in fact, very intimate, which I like. Wherever you sit, you will have great seats. Our seats were on the front row. While the view was great, the acoustics were bad. I suspect having all the speakers right in your face did not make the acoustic situation any better. The band played too loud often drowning out the singers, and those of us sitting on the front row had a hard time hearing the songs. Don't get me wrong, the band was good, however, I wanted to hear the songs. During intermission, I mentioned to one of the workers that we were having a hard time hearing, and the second half was a little better. Unless the Black Ensemble Theater fix the acoustics, I do not recommend front-row seating. I asked someone sitting in the balcony seats how was the sound. The theater goer responded that their sound was great. They could hear clearly. Overall, it was great, and I would like to see it come back!

    Jackie did it again!

by Dorethaday on 8/14/12Black Ensemble Theater Cultural Center - Chicago

For those of us boomers, Marvin Gaye was like family. With strong emotions surrounding his death, I was skeptical about a production detailing his life However, as production began with a no fault - no blame clause, we were take on a journey about how greatness looked and lived in one of the most prolific artists of the century. Though the current run is due to end shortly, I implore you to see it before the curtain goes down, and take some friends.

My friend and I recently saw the story of Marvin Gaye at the Black Ensemble Theater. The performance was amazing. We learned so much about the troubled life of Marvin Gaye, while enjoying his wonderful music. We were transformed back in time in this very entertaining play. You only have a few days left to see this wonderful theater and this fantastic show.
