About

THE LAST SHIP is a new musical with an original score by 16-time Grammy Award winner Sting. Inspired by Sting's own childhood experiences, this World Premiere production features direction by two-time Tony Award winner Joe Mantello (Wicked), a book by Tony Award winner John Logan (Red) and Pulitzer Prize winner Brian Yorkey (Next to Normal) and choreography by Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett (Once).

THE LAST SHIP is set in the English seafaring town of Wallsend, a close-knit community where life has always revolved around the local shipyard and the hardworking men construct magnificent vessels with tremendous pride. But Gideon Fletcher dreams of a different future. He sets out to travel the world, leaving his life and his love behind. When Gideon returns home 14 years later, he finds the shipyard's future in grave danger and his childhood sweetheart engaged to someone else. As the men of Wallsend take their future into their own hands and build a towering representation of the shared dream that defines their existence, Gideon realizes that he left behind more than he could have ever imagined.

THE LAST SHIP is a portrait of a community so bound together by passion, faith and tradition, they'll stop at nothing to preserve the only life they've ever known.

I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of The Last Ship during its pre-Broadway run. In fact, I would see it again if given the chance.

    The last ship

by wolfost on 7/20/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

Firstly the show is too long. The song "the last ship is sung 3 times in the first half, once is enough. Then again at the end of part two which is very well done, the best part of the show. We know it is not a happy story and the location is depressing, but the show needs more "light ,"it certainly is mostly shade, very depressing, not much fun. Good mechanical sets, great dancing, dialogue not very clear because of non American accent, but overall it leaves an empty feeling with the audience. When I look at my watch several times, it tells me this show needs editing. I would love to tell you that this show is great, it is not, but it could be. As avid theatre goers we hope that New York will help to make it what it deservers to be.

This show has the mark of Sting's musicianship throughout it. At times some of the singers even sound like him. The story is well done with meaningful characters, a good arc, and songs that enhance the story. You laugh, you smile, and you cry for this one.

    Enjoyed "The Last Ship"

by Waldo47 on 7/18/14Bank of America Theatre - Chicago

"The Last Ship" tells a great story (despite some plot holes noted by the critics) with fine songs (although, as noted by enough people for this observation to have become a cliche, they all sound like Stings because, well, he wrote them, hello!) and excellent production and staging. Some tweaks are likely before Broadway, but this show is well worth seeing before or after that happens.

    The Last Ship

Standing ovation from all in attendance...and that was BEFORE Sting joined the cast on stage! The sets were amazing in establishing the "tone" of the times and the "feel" of the show.

    THE LAST SHIP WAS INCREDIBLE

The music, the performance, the orchestra were all fantastic. I liked it well enough to consider going to New York and see it on Broadway. A very moving show!
