About

See what Time Magazine exclaims is, “A don’t miss theatre event!  The #1 Broadway musical of the year.”  Winner of the 2012 TONY AWARD® FOR BEST REVIVAL OF A MUSICAL, The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess is hitting the road with award-winning members of the Broadway cast in this stunning and stirring new staging. Accompanied by a lush 23-piece orchestra, this re-envisioned Broadway production includes such legendary songs as “Summertime,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” and “I Got Plenty of Nothing.”

Praised by the New Yorker as, “A great achievement!” and hailed by the Associated Press as, “a Gorgeous version of the Gershwin masterpiece,” The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess is coming to you from its record-breaking engagements at the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University and Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre.   One of Broadway’s most accomplished creative teams, led by Tony Award® -winning director Diane Paulus (Pippin, Hair), Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks (Topdog/Underdog), and two-time Obie Award-winning composer Diedre L. Murray (Running Man), have re-imagined George Gershwin, DuBose and Dorothy Heyward and Ira Gershwin’s legendary masterwork specifically for the musical theatre, what USA Today calls “a canny and exuberant re-affirmation of the original’s enduring brilliance.”

Left after first half. Could not understand what was being said/sung, acoustics and some performers more operatic, thus could not understand. Very slow story and not as engaging as most musicals I've seen.

    We left at intermission

by PhilandMaggie on 6/16/14ASU Gammage - Tempe

Venue is great, seats on first row of balcony were very good. Particularly enjoyed the orchestra's performance. Us old guys had a hard time distinguishing all the lyrics. Famous tunes were great to hear. Bess was wonderfully alive and vivacious. Activities on stage did seem a bit frenetic, maybe trying to do too much in time allotted. I didn't think to ask about hearing support devices which I think I saw one guy with. Is it too expensive to have the lyrics projected on a screen above the stage as is done at the opera?

    Porgy and Bess was excellent

    by LaV56 on 6/15/14ASU Gammage - Tempe

I am a big Gershwin fan so I was delighted to see Porgy and Bess in the Gammage line up. The music and dancing was fantastic. It was done in very good taste and style. I am glad I went! My husband and I loved this event.

    A Classic Worth Seeing

Porgy & Bess is a great couple of hours of entertainment and provides for a lively discussion afterwards for potential, new, and old couples.

    What a great performance

by BayBeBlew on 6/12/14ASU Gammage - Tempe

We had been wanting to see Porgy and Bess for years (probably decades) and when we found out it was being performed at Gammage Hall at ASU when we were in Phoenix visiting family, we decided to go. What a great decision. The singing was amazing, the staging was fabulous, and the overall show exceeded expectations. It was also fun the be inside a buidling that has always fascinated us.

    Confusing Production

by AZSleeper on 6/12/14ASU Gammage - Tempe

We left at intermission...something we almost never do, and we weren't alone. This was a very confusing mishmash of opera and theater musical and the cast seemed as confused as we did. They did their best but Bess, singing in operatic fashion, seemed out of place and context with the other performers. This is a story about plain, simple, hardworking people and it should have been presented as such.

    Porgy and Bess

by JoRN on 6/11/14ASU Gammage - Tempe

The (instrumental) music and the tone of the singers were amazing. Unfortunately I could not understand a word they were singing or speaking nor could anyone in my party...there were 5 of us. I did not know the story of Porgy and Bess prior to coming to the play. I still don't know exactly the story due to poor diction. The theater acoustics are fabulous and the seating very nice the way it is laid out.
