    Not what I was expecting

    by DannyK925 on 4/17/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

While it included some interesting aspects, overall the show was quite a bore. I literally fell asleep throughout the performance, and noticed that the man sitting in front of me did the same. This is not a put-down on the performers...again, it just was not what I was expecting. This show was advertised as a Joffrey event...and I can not justify how this show is considered under their umbrella. Also...15 minute ending, watching a kid sweep the sand smooth?

Left the theatre with an empty feeling

by Anonymous on 3/20/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

Sorry to say, I received very little from Cloud Gate's performance. The dancers were talented, must have been the choreography.

    Transformational Experience at CloudGate/Taiwan

by DanceHUMAN on 3/19/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

First of all, this show is not your typical "sit back and watch dance" type of thing. Be prepared to enter a whole different world. Your universe is transformed into a place of poetry in motion, of holiness, of image and spirit and feeling through stark and at times even disturbing, often slow-motion movement that nonetheless can sometimes catch you quite off-guard and by complete surprise. Elemental, organic, raw, but -- in the words of the artistic director/choreographer Lin Hwai-min in the Q and A after the show, always "healthy," the work takes your experience of Time and completely changes it by seemingly magical, mystical combinations of movement and stillness. Life, death, love, reincarnation, nature, humanity-- Time itself-- these are themes far too many, let alone large, for a single work to take on; yet Songs of the Wanderers does take them on, carry them through, along with you, the audience, and when all disembark by the end of the journey, the travel most assuredly has been fulfilling and fulfilled. It's a meditative masterpiece, so don't expect tutus or contemporary Western fare. Set your mind for something that reaches from the ancient East right through to your current dreams, and you might set off with this amazing company right from the start. They absolutely are 100% so never fear; you'll never be unguided; and believe me--it's worth the trip.

    visually stunning

by GiuseppeGiovannGaribaldi on 3/19/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

looking for something different? this is definitely it, shadow, light and of course, rice showers make this visually appealing. The dancing is consistent with the theme but is otherwise unremarkable.

Song of the Wanderers was like no other!

by LittleLadyMoore on 3/19/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

Cloud Gate Dance Theater is a phenomenal performance group! The discipline and strength displayed during the performance was unbelievable. The "golden grains" setting was breath-taking and the "rain" was simply the most amazing thing I have seen on a stage! A definite MUST SEE performance! All I will say is: Be prepared to show a little "discipline" yourself...The performance requires a level of quietude that most do not.

    Cloud Gate Inspires

by Anonymous on 3/18/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

It's been a while since I've seen contemporary dance, and Cloud Gate did not disappoint. The technique and the expression in their movement was unlike anything I've ever seen. At once beautiful and yet disjointed and deranged.

    Confusing

    by Shaughn2 on 3/17/14Auditorium Theatre - Chicago

I had no idea what was going on the entire show. I witnessed a bunch of people doing yoga in slow motion with falling rice. The show is also not a true 90 minutes. The last 30 minutes is a person sweeping a circle around the stage with rice in slow motion. When the event ended everybody was disappointed and confused. Way overpriced, save your money.

Amazing performance. Only thing missing was a more descriptive explanation in the program of each of the segments.

Water Stains on the Wall was incredibile!

by Ursula12 on 11/4/11Lila Cockrell Theater - San Antonio

I didn't know what to expect, but was very curious. I have never been so captivated by a performance! Watching the dancer's very methodical yet flowing moves was unbelievable and magical. I would see this again.
