Soulful folk-pop duo The Civil Wars has made quite a mark on the genre in just a few short years, hitting the tour trail with the likes of Emmylou Harris and Adele. Singer/songwriters Joy Williams and John Paul White met at a Nashville songwriting session and got to work on an EP entitled “Poison & Wine” with producer Charlie Peacock, the title track of which appeared on the popular TV show “Grey’s Anatomy.”
“Barton Hollow,” The Civil Wars’ full-length debut, surfaced in early 2011 and landed at the top of Billboard’s Independent Albums and Folk Albums charts. It wasn’t long before the two musicians were performing on nighttime television talk shows on both sides of the pond, as well as tackling concerts at the Newport Folk Festival and the iconic Grand Ole Opry.
The Civil Wars also took home Grammy Awards for Best Folk Album and Best Country Duo/Group Performance for the title track, as well as an AMA Award for Duo/Group of the Year and a 2013 Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media (“Safe & Sound” with Taylor Swift).
Though the Nashville outfit produced albums, sold tickets and won awards, the two performers surprised fans with an unexpected hiatus after the August 2013 release of their eponymous sophomore set.

What an incredible show! The Civil Wars are amazing. Their music is so easy and fresh and warm. I love them! Unfortunately, I didn't love the Culture Room quite as much. There is so little standing room, and there were folks smoking weed inside, which is so uncool. Can't wait to see The Civil Wars again, but I will not be returning to the Culture Room.
I honestly couldn't believe how amazing Joy and John Paul were. Their voices elicited both shouts of enthusiastic cheer as well as pin drop silence. They both had an unexpected sense of humor evidenced by the few, but well played, one liners and choice in covers. I enjoyed ever moment of this show. Even the nudging of passers by couldn't disturb me. I will definitely see them again. Every. Chance. I. Get.
Excellent show! The Civil Wars are a true class act!!
The atmosphere was perfect! Not too big not too small! Love the band! Incredible vocals!
Hands down the BEST show I've ever been 2 and probably will ever go 2!! Plus, i got to meet them after the show and they were super nice!! Can't wait to see them again live
The show was amazing! They sound phenomenal live!!
They were unbelievable. Voices, stage presence, guitar. It was all fantastic.
great performance. Zack Williams was a great back up band the The Civil Wars were amazing and really connected with the audience
This was one of the best performances I have been to yet. It was so surreal. I have never heard a crowd get so quiet before in my life. No one was singing along. Everyone was mesmerized by the two wonderful performers on stage. I will never forget my first live experience with the Civil Wars. I plan to see much much more!
