    Love watching young actors

by KDWW on 4/24/13Gladys G Davis Theatre - Morgantown

The play starts slow mainly because it is difficult to understand the roles of each character. And as characters are added, you must be more deductive than I. There are characters at the end of the show that I don't know how they fit in. As a comedy, it was questionable even for the higher intellect. For example, "yellow ball in the side pocket" was not intuitive to begin with and was never delivered with the timing required for a regenerating laugh. Without seeing a pool table, it was hard to associate. However, there were some really good actors that pulled the event together. The girl with the card tricks and the guy that took all the main character's drugs were excellent. Their agility in many scenes highlighted their individualism and great abilities. Above average was the Old Man (hard to relate to such an old person's physical abilities) and the clumsy suitor. Most others were average with at least one or two who were below average actors. But being able to relate to the aristocratic Russian Proletariat has to be extremely difficult. I really enjoyed the music and wished there had been more in the first two acts as background highlights to the action on stage. With a limited stage area it has to be difficult to produce stage sets that allow for flexibility. But I felt very bad for those patrons that sat on either side of the stage when the action and dialog were focused in the dining room area behind opaque walls. I am sure they could not see much and missed a very entertaining part of the performance.
