About The Capitol Steps

The Capitol Steps on Tour

The Capitol Steps offer welcome comic relief in the place that may need it the most: Washington, D.C. The long-standing comedy troupe has kept the nation's capital on its toes since December 1981, when a group of Senate staffers came together to lighten the mood at their annual Christmas party. Over the years, The Capitol Steps' cast has expanded, diversified and toured the country back and forth. In fact, there are now multiple casts — "the result of having large numbers of unemployed Hill staffers," as they put it. At home in Washington, they perform Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center. On tour, they make stops at theaters, opera houses and other prestigious venues in cities from sea to shining sea. Expect silly skits, catchy songs, dead-on impressions and even some thought-provoking commentary, all in the name of fun — and the First Amendment, of course.

The Capitol Steps' motto says just about everything you need to know: "We put the MOCK in Democracy," the comedy team proudly proclaims. It all began in 1981 when Elaina Newport, Jim Aidala and the late Bill Strauss — three of Senator Charles Percy's staffers — put together a few skits and song parodies to share at their Christmas party. The performance was a success, and The Capitol Steps became Washington, D.C.'s go-to group for some much needed laughs. Since forming, the cast has brought on more former Capitol Hill staffers, along with many other theater and comedy veterans. They've recorded over 35 albums and have appeared on major network shows like Good Morning America, 20/20 and CNN's Inside Politics. Each year, they produce comedy specials for public radio, including "Politics Takes a Holiday," which airs every New Year's Eve and 4th of July. They've even performed for a handful of U.S. presidents. For the rest of us, The Capitol Steps share their latest comedy bits every Friday and Saturday night at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. Other cast members tour the country to help us all better digest the absurdities of our current state of affairs.

    Terrible!

by JCN on 10/30/22Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red Bank

Not worth your time or the price of a ticket. I've seen kids' shows that were so much better. Seems like the performers could have been funny but the material was just awful. Nothing like advertised and definitely nothing like The Capitol Steps. We drove over 4 hours to see the show and hope this review saves someone else from a total waste of time

    Capitol Comedy is not comedy

by CaptainAmerica on 10/30/22Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red Bank

After having loved the Capitol Steps over the years I was hoping that this group would be as good as they were. Wrong! I have never been to a show with such poor writing material and even worse performance. It would have been preferable to have gone to a grammar school talent show. I can’t even select a specific low point as there were no even medium points to measure against. The sound system caused the vapid lyrics to be unintelligible which was probably a good thing as those that could be understood were not worth listening to. The so called acting lacked any skill and the performers looked as they were trying to get out if there faster than the audience, if such a thing were possible. If you have the urge to see this show, sit down until the urge passes and hopefully this group has a day job they can return to

    What a treat!

    by TM on 2/1/20

I haven’t laughed so hard in a long time. All the characters played their parts well. They were current and very funny. I truly enjoyed the show.

    Just OK

by Mary on 1/14/20Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

I think that the show was just OK. It really wasn't that comical. In addition, the sound system at the Bergen PAC left a lot to be desired.

    Not their best

by deb on 1/14/20Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

This is the most mediocre performance we've seen from this group. The costumes were worn, the performances substandard.

    Poor sound

by Erv on 1/14/20Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

The quality of the sound in the balcony was terrible. I missed more than half of the show's points.

    Good show

by North Jersey Liz on 1/14/20Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

The material was current and funny. I would have given four stars but the cast did not pronounce words clearly. I'm not hard of hearing, but this made it difficult to understand what they were saying at times

The Capitol Steps Miss a Few

by Mom of Five on 1/14/20Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

I thought the actors were very talented, but felt they were more left leaning in their humor. Between that and the "O Canada" ending I didn't get an overall patriotic feeling. While I agree there are plenty of things to make fun of on both sides, the caricatures were well done, but the words used were very disparaging to President Trump and the right. Subtle, but definitely left.
