    The Bad Plus-AWESOME

by Kevin Z on 12/2/23Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club - Portsmouth

Saw the Bad Plus at Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club in Portsmouth NH. This band delivers! Tons of polyrhythm between bass, guitar, drums, and sax. This band was surprisingly rocking at times for a “jazz” group. The sax and guitar get “inside” each others sound and it becomes one sound, even while playing incredibly technical lines. Can’t recommend this group enough-one of the best shows I’ve ever seen!

    Singular

by BondyPants on 6/14/23High Noon Saloon - Madison

Amazing set. The new lineup was incredible - sax and guitar played as one instrument - transcendent interplay. 5th time seeing them, and I'd travel to see them again.

Music was awesome, but the venue has no seating

by Bermondo on 2/28/23Crystal Ballroom at Somerville Theatre - Somerville

Bad Plus are fantastic, great show, really exciting. I’ll watch them anywhere!!! As for the venue, not a fan. It makes no sense to me to attend a 3 hour jazz concert that is 100% standing room. Not right

    Standing.

by Unhappy on 2/28/23Crystal Ballroom at Somerville Theatre - Somerville

This wasn't the venue's fault. The gig was standing only. Very crowded. Could not see the stage. Left early. Unhappy. These are jazz musicians. Unhappy.

    Great band, mediocre space

by Bill S on 2/28/23Crystal Ballroom at Somerville Theatre - Somerville

Good to see Reid Anderson and Dave King's new line up. I was a huge fan of the trio with Orrin Evans. The new outift with Ben Monder and Chris Speed stretched things out in an entirely new direction - farther from jazz and more toward teance and groove. Solid playing. The Crystal Ballrroom sound was muddied, however, and the space didn't lend itself to the music.

Fantastic show in an exceptional venue

by Doug G on 11/7/21Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club - Portsmouth

Guitarist Ben Monder fits seamlessly into this super-tight unit, giving them even greater melodic and sonic range while retaining their perfect pocket. Jimmy's Jazz & Blues Club in Portsmouth, NH, was a perfect spot for this show - crystal clear sound, intimate feel, and a great Manhattan.

The band was pretty good but the acoustics were not. The bass player complained about playing in an "oil barrel" but he had a huge bass rig that was probably part of the problem. The balance was off any time the band got loud. I would really like to hear a solo performance by Ethan Iverson. The music was intellectually satisfying.

    Music of the highest quality

by WDrummer on 4/22/16Murrys - Columbia

Hands down, The Bad Plus Joshua Redman was an outstanding experience. These guys are top notch musicians and they're not afraid to disrupt status quo in a unique way. I had been waiting to hear them live and was so glad Murry's was the place - its an intimate atmosphere! Unfortunately, our seats were in the balcony. The "balcony" at Murry's is just a raised back seating area with barely any visibility to the main stage area. Visibility was very poor. The band was given a table right behind us at the very back of the place, so we overheard some cool conversation and had the first chance to thank them afterwards! Sound quality was great throughout the venue - three times a sound tech made a stop by our area eyeing up the PA system and obviously ensuring that quality was staying top notch! That was great!

Amazing to see The Bad Plus live. They put on a great show. They played lots of songs off of Inevitable Western and a few of their standards. Bassist Reid Anderson is a trip talking about the set.

    Not what I expected

by crazylion on 10/23/12Mercury Lounge - New York

After waiting over an hour for anyone to even appear on the stage, I was rather disappointed that no announcement or apology was made for starting an hour and 15 minutes late. Even though I knew this what not meant to be typical jazz music, I really did not think it was that extraordinary or amazing. I think I would have in fact preferred some real jazz! Very disappointing overall, especially as I chose this event for my birthday...
