    Tx Tennis Open Semis Lukewarm

by DallasTennisGal on 8/27/12Hilton DFW Lakes - Grapevine

Attended with some tennis girlfriends. Bought tickets with a start time of 6pm, but was left a voicemail message that start was changed to 5pm. Really? Who can get out to DFW Hilton in time for a 5pm 1st match? So we arrived in time for last 2 games of a 6-0, 6-0 match. The 2nd semi was better, Jankovic v. Dellacqua, and the doubles match was a lot of fun too! Very surprised at how light the crowds are. The volunteers & staff were all very nice, and the food & drinks were good!

    2011 Texas Tennis

by Ihearttennis on 7/2/12People blocking your view with their umbrellas was a MAJOR problem. and of course it was hothothot - Grapevine is great and its surprising there aren't other atp or wta events here.

I went to the Texas Tennis Open last year and it was exciting to see the professional tennis women up close and personal. But....of course it is hot so I won't go on about that but the problem was not the event the problem was the spectaturs. It was unbelievable all the people that popped up umbrellas and blocked the view of the people behind them! It was crazy how many annoucements had to be made about not blocking the view of the people behind you but most people were selfish and didn't listen so they were down front but they put up their umbrellas and just hoped that the people behind them were meek and passive and wouldn't say anything. It happened so many times that it ruined the event for me. It's stupid for Texas to have a professional tennis event in the hottest month of the year so because of the stupidity of scheduling and the annoyance of the spectators and their view blocking umbrellas I will not be going back.

Texas Tennis Open - Final = HOT

by Princephreak on 8/30/11Hilton DFW Lakes - Grapevine

As an avid tennis player and watcher, it was great to see a professional event live. Although, I do question my sanity on purchasing tickets for an outdoor event in TX, in August no less. Never mind that it is normally hot this time of year, this was unbearable. With that being said, I question the decision of the committee to have this event in August? The ONLY reason I would not recommend the event is due to the time of year it is held. Otherwise, I really do think it was great. I think I could have enjoyed it even more if I was not so blasted hot.

    sabine and sorana

by nike41 on 8/29/11Hilton DFW Lakes - Grapevine

I really enjoyed the tournament itself. The players were very friendly and down to earth. The staff was very friendly. My only complaint was that the concessions were way too expensive!!!! $4 for a single can of soda is absolutely ridiculous when I can get a 12 pack for the same price.

    Fun

by zanparr on 8/28/11Hilton DFW Lakes - Grapevine

Although it was HOT, HOT, the tennis was great and the accomodations were very nice. Hotel and event personnel were friendly and helpful. We actually stayed the next day and watched the finals - Lisciki and Rezai - I would love to see more WTA and ATP events in Texas. Well worth going. We drove up from Spring, Texas

    Terrific tennis

by Anonymous on 8/28/11Hilton DFW Lakes - Grapevine

The singles semis of the Texas Tennis Open offered up quite an evening of power play tennis. These women...don't call them girls....are fantastic. All four semifinalists improved their games as the week went on until the semis. I hope the other fans appreciated the talent as much as I did. For the event itself, I really liked the food selection; it was not your standard fried fare and processed cheese food nachos. The fresh smoothies were incredible. The burgers, salads, and chips all looked good. It was nice to be at a sporting event where the fresh and healthy options were really the only choice. The only two things which could be managed differently were the entrance area and the cash-for-tickets line. Then entrance area and box office were stacked right atop one another, and the box office was actually past the security line and the ticket checking people. Having the box office outside the entrance (like at other sporting events) would clear up both confusion and congestion. Maybe they can do that next year. As for the food tent, it was not obvious that you had to get tickets to get food. The idea itself is a good one, but the instructions for its requirement were not posted anywhere; you just had to figure it out. Plenty of children were in the food room trying to buy food not understanding the ticket situation. You could see the bewilderment on their faces. In addition to posting the instructions, moving the ticket line away from the food selections would have 1) given more room for people to investigate what they wanted to order 2) made the ticket line more obvious, and 3) made the overall process easier. The silent auction offered some interesting items; however, I saw very few people actually participate. (Maybe by the finals, it was more full.) Perhaps if someone had been at the table encouraging you to come over, check out the offerings, and bid, more participation would have occurred. The proceeds were for a great cause (children's hospital), so I hope that the auction worked ok for them. Perhaps next year, someone could encourage (not push or force) folks to come over and have a look. This year, the only way you even knew about it was through the PA person. Overall, I loved being at this event all week and am thrilled to have professional women's tennis a part of the DFW area. The people running the event and volunteering at it were all happy, friendly, and helpful. That was so nice to see. The DFW area is known for its strong volunteer activity, and I was proud to see it in effect at the TTO. I look forward to next year.

Texas Tennis Open was... well, "Meh"

by TennisBuff2010 on 8/27/11Hilton DFW Lakes - Grapevine

Since this tournament is only a $220K overall purse with $39K to the winner, I didn't expect to see the high intensity playing and world class name draw that a WTA Level 1 event would draw. So, my expectations were on level with the type of event I was planning on seeing. With that being said, I sort of did expect to see some of the best in the world really grinding it out and fighting hard for every point a week before the US Open. Instead, what we got were to fairly lack luster routine wins in the quarterfinals. Tournament officials can't help that. The results are what they are. Now, if the match play were the only problem, I would definitely come back next year. In fact, I would even buy more tickets to more matches. Really, the problem is that the overall production of the tournament seems, well, amateurish. Let's start off with the grounds. To get any real food or relief from the heat you needed to walk all the way down a quite steep hill away from the stadium and grand stand courts. Then, there was the stadium court where I paid a premium price to get first row reserved seating (one level up from the box seating). The view for the entire first and second row was obstructed by four thick metal bars providing railing so no one would "fall off" into the box seats. Seriously? Has no one heard of plexiglass, or even ROPE! I spent most of the first two matches sitting on the floor or huntching to get an unobstructed view. By the time the third match started enough people had left that I could move up a few rows. I will never pay for that again! Poor ball kids were wearing this HIDEOUS green outfits with a yellow strip down the middle or sides that showed every drop of their sweat and were WAY too baggy on most of the kids. Seriously people, it's AUGUST IN TEXAS. These kids should have been wearing breathable white outfits. I expect the players to be drenched in sweat and panting, not the ball kids. Ushers did not a do a good job managing when customers were allowed to their seats. I don't know if they didn't understand by tour level events do not stop play after the first game. The players change ends, but there's really no break until the first three games are played. The beginning of each match had the umpire calling for "fans to take their seats quickly". The bleacher set up was also another idea that wasn't quite thought through all the way. People were constantly kicking over bottles and cans underneath where the item would fall 20 - 50 feet and land with a crash right in the middle of the point. Some padding down there would have helped alleviate that. On a final note, and this is a personal gripe, to not allow fans to bring in their own WATER during this time of the year is absolutely criminal. You don't want me to bring a picnic basket worth of food. Ok. I get that. But geez, I can't bring in my own thermos full of nice cold ice water and you make me pay $4 for a 12 oz bottled water that gets warm in 5 minutes. Criminal. Unless this tournament is held in a different venue, I will not be coming back next year.

    Enjoyed watching Lisicki play

by thevice on 8/26/11Hilton DFW Lakes - Grapevine

I really enjoyed getting to watch the ladies professional tennis tour play in DFW. I have been a fan of the ladies tour and tennis in general since the late 70's. I wish DFW had a permanent tennis facility that would attract an annual spot on the tour. (Maybe not in July/August) This would have North Texas represented in all the major sports now that we have Formula 1 coming to Austin in 2012. Sorta like North Texas.
