About

The Sweet In Concert

The Sweet didn't start out intending to define a new genre of rock ‘n' roll, but they just couldn't help themselves. As they immersed themselves in London's post-psychedelic music scene, the four working-class lads of The Sweet — singer Brian Connolly, guitarist Andy Scott, bassist Steve Priest, and drummer Mick Tucker — grew discontent with the sugary pop of their early-1970s singles.

The next decade saw them unearthing new ideas in music and fashion, and the band caught hold, embracing and even competing with David Bowie's gender-bending persona with increasingly flamboyant musical flourishes. Their 1974 breakout album Desolation Boulevard found Connolly screeching as much as singing and Scott deploying funk-infused wah-wah guitar and spacey synth effects alongside Priest's undeniably funky bass lines.

Most famously, Scott's riffage combined with Connolly's cartoonish vocals on The Sweet's biggest hit, "Ballroom Blitz." That song, along with further glam-rock landmarks "Fox on the Run" and "The Six Teens," established The Sweet on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Suddenly the band was at the center of a revolution, and they had the songs to back it up.

After the release of 1978's Level Headed album, Connolly left the band to start a solo career. The rest of the band carried on without him, releasing three more albums before breaking up in 1981. Glam rock evolved into heavy metal, trading playfulness and fluid sexuality for raw aggression and machismo. But the songs remained.

These days, four decades after the band's heyday, the two living original members — Priest and Scott — tour with their own versions of The Sweet. Priest, the bassist, relocated to Los Angeles, gathered a lineup of younger musicians from that city's accomplished rock scene, and regularly tours the United States. Scott stuck around London and put together a new band there that often plays to adoring fans across Europe and Australia.

    False Advertising

by Upset33 on 2/6/24The Showroom at the Golden Nugget - Las Vegas

You promoted Andy Scott’s Sweet but sold me tickets to Steve Priest’s Sweet. Absolute unacceptable. The only reason I spent $300 was to see the last surviving original member Andy Scott.

    Super SWEET ! ! !

    by Johnny Blackout on 7/20/23

I saw them for a free outdoor concert in Albany, New York last week and they were amazing! These guys are full of energy and played all their hard rock and heavy stuff. It was great. The Singer is a powerhouse. The guy was off the hook covering every inch of the stage. At times he got a little raspy, but it added to the energy of the song. They played all my favorite songs off of desolation Boulevard. These guys take professionalism to another level. I stood there. I was completely blown away. Every time I attempted to videotape a little of it. I couldn’t take my eyes off the band, so I got no footage. A storm came in and the police ordered them off the stage but they didn’t listen. So the singer said “I think we’re going to get arrested but we’re gonna play another song.” The set was cut short but they barreled through the big hits to the finish. The sound quality was amazing. All Pro! Don’t listen to the bad reviews. These guys were stellar, one of the best concerts I have seen in a long time.

    It Was Okay

by SueB on 4/10/23The Showroom at the Golden Nugget - Las Vegas

The frontman for Sweet was very entertaining and the band was good, however, the frontman told the audience to fill the seats in front so the people in the back who paid very little for their seats had a front row seat. For those who paid more for their seats were screwed. He encouraged people to stand up and rock with him and now you had to stand or couldn’t see the show. Normally it’s an older audience and people sit down but with encouraging people to come to the front everyone in front was standing.

    Awesome

by Ramona5 on 4/10/23The Showroom at the Golden Nugget - Las Vegas

We had an awesome time. Finding out that there wasn’t any original band member to play their music was the only sad point to the night. The replacement members did them proud! Will see them again. Thank you for the memories 👍

Sweet and the Golden Nugget Las Vegas

by Dimes on 4/10/23The Showroom at the Golden Nugget - Las Vegas

The band is still rocking it. Was great hearing the songs from the past performed by a highly energetic group of professional musicians. The lead singer was great to watch as he went around the stage and in the audience area. Seeing songs like Fox on the Run and Little Willie bring back memories from the past. Thoroughly enjoy seeing shows at the Golden Nugget, the showroom is a comfortable place to enjoy live music. Comforatable seating, good acoustics and very pleasant/helpful staff.

    Disappointing

by L.R. on 10/28/19The Showroom at the Golden Nugget - Las Vegas

The show started late, about 10 minutes or so, and we were surprised to see a young man singing lead. It looked to us as though only one original member was present. We really liked the guitarist, he was very good. The lead singer, Pauly Z, I believe he said, tried really hard and had a good voice but it was not what we expected and it didn't sound like the original. He also told people in the audience to come up and fill in the spots up front which we did not appreciate since we paid for front row seats. Two women came up and blocked my view. During the encore, Ballroom Blitz, instead of just singing the song he called repeatedly for the audience to sing different parts. That was the song we really wanted to hear but the rendition we heard fell far short of our expectations. I am sorry we paid over $500 for 4 front row seats.

    Decent Performance

by Pete on 4/23/19The Showroom at the Golden Nugget - Las Vegas

First, it wasn't the Sweet in the picture shown by Ticketmaster, that's Andy Scotts Sweet, this concert was the other version of the band going around that primarily focus on the USA, Steve Priests Sweet. I,ll be honest I wasn't expecting much, I mean the original member (Steve) is now 71 years old and clearly not in the best of health, and the rest of the band really have no claim to the Original Sweet name - that being said ! I was pleasantly surprised, as a unit they are very tight, they did pretty good renditions of some of the heavier Sweet tracks as well as some of the more mainstream tracks. The singer is a showman and knows how to get the audience going, by the end of the night everyone was on their feet. Steve sat on as chair for the concert but can still play the bass well, chimes in on backing vocals and has a great sense of humor. The venue was quite full, mostly with the older generation of music loving fans, but by the time the end of the show come along with none other than the "Ballroom Blitz" the place really was rocking. good show and well worth seeing.
