    Don't Go!

    by 1717BR on 9/23/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

Sunday in the Park With George was a complete waste of time due to terrible music and a boring story. The acting and costuming were very professional, but a group of 9 of us voted unanimously to leave at the Intermission.

Sunday in the Park with George was unforgettable!

by CvilleLCM on 9/23/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

Signature did it again: what a wonderfully realized production of a Sondheim classic! It was warm, intimate, poignant. Kudos to the director for having George dab his brush into the air while singing "Finishing the Hat." It was a brilliant move that demonstrated the obsessiveness of the artist so much better than sitting still, and Claybourne Elder conveyed the underlying pain beautifully. Cast was great - as was the orchestra. We're only sorry that we waited until late in the run to see this production, or we would have gone back for more.

    Extraordinary Production in every respect!

by Joyious on 9/20/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

Having worked in little theater, I MARVELED AT EVERY ASPECT OF THE PRODUCTION! The Set Design & Painting, the Lighting, the Costumes, the Staging, the Well Chosen Cast with their lovely voices - all were perfect. I have seen "Sunday" before but no one else has presented such an extraordinary complete package. It was an evening of teary eyed & breathless joy.

Seurat play great acting, 2nd act story a letdown

    by Tickets2 on 9/20/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

The first act is wonderful with great characterization, acting, and story line, but the shorter second act is a time change from the first part of the play and a disappointment in story line. The switch to about 50 years in the future has too much emphasis on the modern publicity of a present day grandson's project.rather than the lives of Mr. Seurat and his former mistress's new life. The thread sewing the two acts is there, but it seems disappointing/ somewhat disjointed from the first act. The actors playing the mistress and George, as well as the supporting characters in the play, are marvelous and invite the audience to respond to their positions in the society of the times and their character and personal situations. The stage is wonderfully small and intimate with the audience.

Sunday in the Theater with George

    by 1GLS on 9/17/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

This was an exceptional production on so many levels, I do not know where to start. The best thing to say is that this fine piece of theater was staged, sung, and executed professionally and that it rivaled any production that i have had the pleasure to see on Broadway. While the cast had the spirits of Broadway greats such as mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters watching, they excelled in every aspect of this production. It was a pleasure to spend Sunday in the theater with Monsieur Seurat and company.

    A Sunday to Remember

by Sondheimite on 9/16/14Signature Theatre - Arlington

Having previously seen three productions of "Sunday in the Park with George," including the original Broadway production, my wife and I were well familiar with the show. Having seen previous production of Sondheim material from the Signature Theater, we were expecting a fine production. Given this background, we were still not prepared for the absolutely stunning production of the show that we saw last Saturday at the Signature. The overall production was the best that we have seen, and the second act worked more effectively than in any production that we have seen to date. The casting was superb, the performances outstanding, the costumes and set were first rate, and the orchestra brought the score to exhilarating life. Claybourne Elder as George Seurat and later George his great-grandson, and Brynn O'Malley as Dot/Marie were spot on in their portrayals of the two lead characters. Ms.O'Malley was particularly effective in portraying the elderly Marie in the second act, bringing the role a presence and sense of humor that were superior to all prior Maries that we had experienced. This production brought out the humor in the piece that had only been hinted at in previous productions. This was particularly evident in the opening scene of Act II when the characters in the painting are revealing their true feelings about their experiences as the characters depicted on Seurat's canvas. In previous productions, this scene often had a kvetching quality, but here it was infused with ironic humor. Were the show not sold out for its run, and the theater not four hours away from our home in New Jersey, we would surely go to see it again before it closes its limited run.
