About

After forming in 1961 in Chicago, Illinois, while in high school, Styx steadily toured and expanded from a three-piece to a quintet during the 60s, signing with local record label Wooden Nickel Records in 1972, and releasing their self-titled debut that year. 1973’s Styx II and The Serpent Is Rising followed, as well as 1974’s Man of Miracles, further refining their output as they transitioned from straight-forward rock n roll into a more progressive rock, incorporating psychedelic flourishes and experimental structuring, as well as hard rock guitars, powerful ballads and theatrical elements. They signed with A&M Records, releasing Equinox in 1975, and subsequently 1976’s Crystal Ball and 1977’s The Grand Illusion, their breakout album that sold over 3 million copies propelled by singles Come Sail Away and Fooling Yourself. In 1981, Styx released Paradise Theatre, a concept album chronicling the fictional rise and fall of the Chicago theatre, which became their fourth consecutive triple-platinum album, reached #1 on the Billboard charts, and spawned five singles, including top ten hits The Best of Times and Too Much Time on My Hands. Next was 1983’s full-fledged rock opera Kilroy Was Here, which featured synthesizer and vocoder-driven Mr. Roboto and the power ballad Don’t Let It End. Following a half-decade separation in the 80s and a brief break-up in the 90s, Styx’s 1996 tour Return to Paradise was a success, and since then have continued releasing albums and satisfying ticket holders at concerts around the world with the likes of Def Leppard, Foreigner and Boston. Over the course of their career, Styx has played many famous venues, like Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion and Madison Square Garden.

    Disappointed in venue

by Nancy on 3/27/24Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino Event Center - Niagara Falls

On floor seating with no chair elevation is not a good idea. I purchased a seat 12 rows back center stage to see my favorite band. I paid a lot of money to be this close. The four people in row 11, right in front of me, decided to stand for the entire concert. Of course the two directly in front of me were tall and the girl had on a wedge heel that made her even taller that blocked my view. The people behind me were yelling for them to sit down. I tapped on the girls shoulder and asked her if she could sit down as the people behind her could not see and her response was “no”.. Therefore I had to watch the concert off the big screens, even though I was in row 12. Styx was awesome and sounded great. I know it is a concert and people stand but it isn’t necessary to stand the entire concert. Any way I left the concert disappointed and I will never go to another concert in the event center at the Seneca Niagara Casino if the flooring is not elevated seating.

    Total WIN WIN

by Reddman on 3/26/24Toyota Oakdale Theatre - Wallingford

My wives favorite band. A nice gourmet Italian dinner beforehand, then the show in a beautiful acoustically phenomenal theater. We were up close and personal about 8 rows up, stage left. Having seeing them many times (including flying my wife to Myrtle Beach for a show) I would say the band has only improved with time. Two thumbs up for the Band, the Venue and Live Nation for bringing the shows to us.

    Still sound great

by Mike S on 3/26/24Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino Event Center - Niagara Falls

It is criminal that a band that is 50 years old still sounds and performs so well. Tommy Shaw sings better than he did in his youth, Lawrence Gowan carries the Dennis DeYoung material with respect and is a better keyboardist than Dennis. James Young still plays amazingly. The rhythm section of Terry Gowan and Todd Sucherman were an absolute machine. I grumbled a bit about ticket prices, but this show was a bargain based on strength of performance.

Styx was excellent! Wished they played longer. They have so many more songs they could have played. They were tight and you would have never known time has passed!

    Amazing!

by Norm C. on 3/26/24Toyota Oakdale Theatre - Wallingford

The show was fantastic! The Oakdale should consider putting up larger monitors in the auditorium. The ones up there currently are really too small for the size of the venue. All other venues have screens that are compatible with their size. The concession prices are really excessive! The tee shirts are also too expensive! Gone are the days of the $10 tee shirts outside the venue, I guess. And the quality of the ones inside are not as good as we're being told they are. Lastly, just so someone reads it, the parking is unreasonably priced. I pay every time for premier parking because I can't sit that long in a car and not move. I paid $20.00 for my parking, and I saw the other night that it went up to $30. I was shopping for tickets last week and saw that premier parking for the Oakdale for the event I was shopping for was $50.00! C'mon! When does it end? I've been to hundreds of shows since I was 15. I'm now 65 and I have to say, my concert going days are pretty much done and it's because of the costs involved in the total concert experience. $70. dinner (cheap), travel expenses $15, Tickets $160, 2 beers $30 and now parking $30. Total of $305.00 for the two of us for 1 night out! $405.00 if I purchase 2 tee shirts! Can't do it anymore. I'm recently retired, and I have to keep my finances in order. Thanks for the memories. My first concert was at the Oakdale in 1973. The tickets were to Tom Jones. I won them on the radio, and I took my Mom. The Oakdale was owned by Ben and Beau Seagal at the time and the tickets were $4.75 each.
