Caught Steve performing at the Ark this past weekend. The venue, which is intimate, was about 2/3's full. I couldn't help but feel sorry for Steve for the so-so house, but it was what it was. Steve performed solo - just a guy with a guitar, a selection of harmonica's, and the occasional boot stomp.
It was hard not to notice all of the empty seats given that Steve performed with the house lights up. (After a couple of songs I went and asked a volunteer if the house lights would get turned down and was told that they were on at Steve's request.)
Steve did not let the empty seats get to him and was in good humor, chatting amiably after most songs. If you were a fan I would imagine that you left happy. At the same time, I doubt he made many converts.
Highlights for me included The American in Me, When the Sun Shines, and the obligatory Romeo's Tune. But, undoubtedly another attendee would probably list three different songs.
It's hard not to root for Steve. Odds are his best days are behind him, monetarily speaking. He needs your support. He gives an honest performance with no ego. Check him out - you'll be glad that you did.
