The Los Angeles Times aptly stated, "Genius is a word often tossed around in musical circles, but it has been rightfully applied to Stanley Jordan."
In a career that took flight in 1985 with commercial and critical acclaim, guitar virtuoso STANLEY JORDAN has consistently displayed a chameleonic musical persona of openness, imagination, versatility and maverick daring. Be it bold reinventions of classical masterpieces or soulful explorations through pop-rock hits, to blazing straight ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisational works—solo or with a group—Jordan can always be counted on to take listeners on breathless journeys into the unexpected.
Key to Jordan’s fast-track acclaim was his mastery of a special technique on the guitar’s fretboard. Instead of conventional strumming and picking, Jordan's innovative "touch technique" is an advanced form of two-handed tapping. While a handful of other players were using similar techniques, Stanley’s fluid, multi-layered textures and sheer virtuosity raised the bar for excellence. But his technique, though impressive, is always a means to a musical end. His music is imbued with a warmth and sensitivity that has captured the imagination of listeners worldwide. A classically trained pianist before playing guitar, Jordan wanted greater freedom in voicing chords on his guitar, so he applied piano principles to do so. Jordan's touch technique allows the guitarist to play melody and chords simultaneously with an unprecedented level of independence. It also allows Jordan to play simultaneously on two different guitars, or even on guitar and piano. He says that “I think of it as a single instrument, but one with a wide range of tonal colors—that’s why I do it.”
To date Jordan has performed in over 60 countries on 6 continents. During the 1980s he collaborated with a diverse array of artists, including performances with Art Blakey and Richie Cole and recordings with Stanley Clarke and Kenny Rogers. The track with Rogers, "Morning Desire", became America's #1 country song in 1986. Later Jordan became a frequent guest with Les Paul during Paul's legendary Monday nights at Iridium in New York.
Today Jordan performs frequently as a soloist and with his band, as well as collaborating with other guitarists such as Kevin Eubanks, Sharon Isbin and Muriel Anderson. He's also a frequent guest with jam bands such as the Dave Matthews Band, the String Cheese Incident, Phil Lesh, Moe and Umphrey's McGee.

Jimmy’s Jazz Club is the best venue for hosting great music events. The sound system rocks. Stanley Jordan, thanks for keeping the memory alive with your rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Simply awesome.

by Ed on 11/9/21Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club - PortsmouthBrought my 16 year old son. We both play and love guitars. I sent him some YouTube videos of Stanley Jordan and he wanted to go with me. We both really enjoyed the show. The staff at Jimmy’s were all nice. It was a bit fancier than I am used to, but hey it was a memorable night I got to share with my boy son!

Stanley Jordan gave us all of his talent and energized the audience with almost 3 hrs of nonstop performance. We certainly got our money’s worth and had a very memorable experience.

We sat on back seats on fourth floor so view was not great. Suggest perhaps adding a monitor up there. Otherwise, a wonderful experience.

He can play 2 guitars simultaneously, guitar and piano simultaneously, and plays both rhythm and lead on a single guitar. This is really great music and leaves you with the feeling, "This is not possible!" A must see event. Even if you normally do not care for jazz, you should see this show. He mixes in Hendrix and other rock in his playlist.

He is an amazing guitarist! The first time I saw Stanley Jordan he played two guitars at the same time! This time he play both a keyboard and guitar! Great band (bass and drums). Sound was ok for this concert however I know Stanley Jordan is an very dynamic player which means a lot of his songs he play very softly then loud. This sound system did not have the same dynamic range as the first concert. I would recommend to see Stanley Jordan again!

What this man has done to overcome illness and to entirely relearn his craft is nothing short of miraculous. I would highly recommend seeing him. I am thrilled to have finally gotten the chance to see Stanley Jordan and he was sensational. He is a genius level of talent. His playing is so unique that I sat there in awe of what he does. He even played the piano and guitar at the same time. The NJPAC and The attached Victoria Theatre, where this event took place, are the 2 best theatres hands down to see a show in New Jersey. Don't ever pass up the opportunity to see Stanley Jordan.
