    St. Petersburg Phil Rocks Shostakovich

by DrClar on 3/19/17Valley Performing Arts Center - Northridge

The St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra came to the Valley Performing Arts Center (VPAC) in Northridge, CA last Thursday (3/16/2017) with a purpose - to show us how the Shostakovich Symphony No. 5 should sound, and did they ever! Despite the rather loose direction from long-time conductor Yuri Temirkanov, the players gave a precise but rousing rendition of this famous symphony. The other part of the program was the Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1 featuring pianist Garrick Ohlsson. This performance, while good enough, proved the orchestra (and soloist) mortal and capable of a routine run-through. j

    Outstanding performance

by Spring66 on 3/4/17E.J. Thomas Hall - The University of Akron - Akron

The St. Petersburg (Russia) Philharmonic gave an outstanding performance for the Tuesday Musical Association on March 1, 2017. With over 70 members on stage at once, the sound was rich and nuanced. The performers played with energy, subtlety, and grace. The arranging was very impressive. The Shostakovich selection was especially well-done. It was a lovely evening of world-class music!

    St Petersburg Philharmonic

by DerekuakronStudent on 3/4/17E.J. Thomas Hall - The University of Akron - Akron

First piece featured the piano playing abilities of the composer. The crescendo and decrescendo of the instrumentalists was astounding! The Gusto of the pianist will forever stay in my mind. The second featured piece was in a minor key with much dissonance! I was in the US Marine Corps with combat experience. It reminded me of the gathering of troups and being ready for battle. The marching and sneakiness of the feet running to the battle horn, the quick beating of ones heart as violins zinged bullets, percussionist explosions of indirect artillary! The dissonant waves of feelings as the battle ends and groups pick up their wounded and dead. Sleeping with battled nightmares and waking to a new day of the same dissonance and battle after battle. No break no relief until the medals are pinned and it comes to the end of your tour!

Tchaikovsky's piano concerto is one of my favorite pieces. Pianist and symphony orchestra were in sync with each other. and acoustics added a phenomenal sound to end an enjoyable evening for my wife and self.
