Sporting Kansas City History

Sporting Kansas City has the honor of being one of the original franchises of Major League Soccer, first kicking off in 1996 as the Kansas City Wiz. A year later, the name changed to the Kansas City Wizards, which remained in use until the end of the 2010 season.

The Wiz/Wizards/Sporting KC were founded by Lamar Hunt, who owned the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL. Hunt also helped to create Major League Soccer, the American Football League, and the United Soccer Association of the '60s, and his Hunt Sports Group owned the Wizards until shortly before he died in 2006.

Kansas City's MLS franchise has been home to some of the greatest names in American and international soccer, including Alexi Lalas, Tony Meola, Preki and Matt Besler. They have had a sustained period of achievement under former Wizards player and 2000 MLS Defender of the Year Peter Vermes, who has coached the team since 2009.

Sporting KC have claimed the MLS Cup in 2000 and 2013, a Supporters’ Shield in 2000 and four U.S. Open Cup titles (2004, 2012, 2015, and 2017). In 2023, Kansas City reached the Conference Semifinals of the MLS Cup Playoffs.

    Parking!

by Nebraska on 4/16/24GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City

So DISAPPOINTED in the handling of the Parking!! Paid for the pass didn’t even use it because we ended up paying some random parking fee so we could get in on time! And we didn’t! Missed the warm up , missed the announcement of the line up of Inter Miami! Horrible organization of the parking totally dropped the ball on one of the biggest games and should have known better! Messi was coming!!

    Great evening

by Fisherman Dan on 4/16/24GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City

Ticket master delivered! Every part of the experience was super easy. Tickets were sent almost immediately and super easy to download to my wallet. They offered parking passes which I hadn’t even thought of. The tickets were exactly where we had ordered them from. I will always use Ticketmaster from now on and never some subpar ticket place like stub hub.

    Sporting KC/Inter Miami

by Emily on 4/16/24GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City

Had a great time at the game this past Saturday night. The Stadium was electric with all the Messi fans in the house. My only criticism is that parking and traffic flow is a nightmare even when purchasing a parking pass close to the stadium. We had no trouble finding a parking spot, but it took 35 minutes to get into the parking lot. Upon leaving there was no manning of the traffic happening and between people weaving through moving cars and congestion in the pedestrian tunnel to outer parking lot I’m surprised no one was injured.

Great Preview of Large Venue Soccer

by JB on 4/16/24GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium - Kansas City

The energy was contagious. Great atmosphere. Both teams played well and if not for a couple giveaways the score could have gone SKC’s way. Bravo!!!

What a fantastic game. MLS NEEDS TO take advantage of the Messi power to up the game.
