Sporting Kansas City History

Sporting Kansas City has the honor of being one of the original franchises of Major League Soccer, first kicking off in 1996 as the Kansas City Wiz. A year later, the name changed to the Kansas City Wizards, which remained in use until the end of the 2010 season.

The Wiz/Wizards/Sporting KC were founded by Lamar Hunt, who owned the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL. Hunt also helped to create Major League Soccer, the American Football League, and the United Soccer Association of the '60s, and his Hunt Sports Group owned the Wizards until shortly before he died in 2006.

Kansas City's MLS franchise has been home to some of the greatest names in American and international soccer, including Alexi Lalas, Tony Meola, Preki and Matt Besler. They have had a sustained period of achievement under former Wizards player and 2000 MLS Defender of the Year Peter Vermes, who has coached the team since 2009.

Sporting KC have claimed the MLS Cup in 2000 and 2013, a Supporters’ Shield in 2000 and four U.S. Open Cup titles (2004, 2012, 2015, and 2017). In 2023, Kansas City reached the Conference Semifinals of the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Children's Mercy Park is such a great arena. There really isn't a bad seat in the house.

Great Family Fun at Sporting KC

by LinzF on 8/23/16Children's Mercy Park - Kansas City

This was our first game. There were vendors, freebies, and activities before we went in. Everything was so family friendly and we had a really great time! Can't wait to go back.

    Too Loud!!!

by Knycty on 7/14/16Children's Mercy Park - Kansas City

This review is for families with small children; the whole stadium atmosphere is way too loud and wild for us. Scared my 3 year-old to death. Yes, I expected a loud crowd at a soccer game, but the fireworks and loud, loud music made it much worse.

    Great venue, great team!

by tvail4 on 7/13/16Children's Mercy Park - Kansas City

Our seats (102, row 21) were almost perfect, on the shaded side of the stadium for an evening game. They were at the perfect height. Only being more central could have been better, but probably not worth the premium.

Great Game, Venue, Food, and Service, Weird Seatin

by Derreck on 7/7/16Children's Mercy Park - Kansas City

First and foremost, it was a great game in an incredible stadium. The park is unbelievable. We had the Terrace or "Bud Light Corner" seats which are an open area with all you can eat and drink. The food was great but there are about half as many chairs as there are tickets to that section, so for the first 70 minutes of the match, we found ourselves trying to see around people who were also standing around, standing in front of chairs, or sitting in the high chairs. Eventually, people leave the game early and we were able to enjoy the last 15-20 minutes of the match from some chairs. I might not recommend this section but I definitely recommend the event itself!

    Great seats, great venue!

by tvail4 on 7/6/16Children's Mercy Park - Kansas City

Seats were at the perfect height in the stands. My 2-year-old loved watching the Cauldron. The team never gave up and treated us to a super entertaining match.

    Amazing time supporting Sporting!

by Kt15 on 6/23/16Children's Mercy Park - Kansas City

This was a great experience for me. All of the employees I encountered were kind and helpful! We bought tickets in the Members Stand and it was an unforgettable atmosphere. It was easy to forget about the heat with the indoor space to cool off in. Unfortunately, I was a little unimpressed with the food from the concession stand, but that is my one complaint! Everything else was an amazing experience.

    Well Worth It

by AlKaDi on 5/30/16Children's Mercy Park - Kansas City

If this is the future of soccer in America, it is in good hands. Family atmosphere, with lots of fans having a good time cheering for their home team. The souvenirs were a bit on the expensive side, oh well. The stadium is the perfect size and there are plenty of things sto do and restaurants to eat at near by. An all around enjoyable time.
