A great way to swing in the holidays!

by DorothynotfromKansas on 12/1/14Charline McCombs Empire Theatre - San Antonio

This was a collective effort of accomplished musicians in their own right. Mr. Watkins played down his band's and vocalist's abilities quite humorously. The atmosphere was perfect, from the "Charlie Brown Christmas" tree on the piano to the conductor's wingtip shoes. Too bad it only lasted an hour, but what a wonderful, toe-tapping hour! All the soloists were impressive, although Mr. Ruiz's Latin departure off "Linus & Lucy" on trumpet was somewhat abrasive to start off the evening. Can't wait to see them play the Empire or any other SA venue again!

    Holiday Swing

by Shequeen on 12/1/14Charline McCombs Empire Theatre - San Antonio

A little disappointed in the concert. I went to this concert last year and it was fabulous! This year it barely lasted one hour. Typically Brent will show off his piano skills, which are amazing, but we hardly saw any of that. The female singer was so-so. Pierre is most awesome and would have loved to hear more from him. All in all, we paid $63.00 for nine of us to attend this concert. That's well over $500.00! Just feel very short changed here, dissappointed.....

11/28/14 South Texas Jazz - Holiday Swing!

by Elsawms on 12/1/14Charline McCombs Empire Theatre - San Antonio

Love, love, love the music and energy shared by Doc Watkins and his orchestra! Especially fond of Pierre, Maggie Rose and the percussionist, Brandon Guerra...awesome way to kick off the holiday season.

didn't know either, but was a foot stomping, hand clapping evening. Great music and a superior way to spend a terrific evening forgetting the world and just having a musical experience.

    South Texas Jazz

by Anonymous on 6/13/14Charline McCombs Empire Theatre - San Antonio

This is the second performance I have seen by Doc Watkins and his band. The other was the Mardi Gras concert. Both were phenomenal. The musicians are outstanding and the pieces they play are entertaining and engaging. The thing I like the most is that not only is the audience having a terrific time, the band members obviously are too. If you like jazz, make sure you make it to their next performance.

    Good effort

by Matt1958 on 3/11/14Charline McCombs Empire Theatre - San Antonio

The show was lively, but it did have some problems for my wife and me, transplanted from New Orleans. They seemed to have had a very limited number of actual "Mardi Gras" tunes, which was evidenced by the fact that they made the few that they did have stretch out as much as they could. What they SHOULD have done was just played more "New Orleans" tunes instead---just plain old New Orleans Jazz and Blues that most people here have never been witness to. Don't get me wrong(!), the band was very good at playing their instruments. The gentleman that played sax and sang was awesome! I should remember his name, because he was "given his propers" about fifty times during the show, as were all of the musicians, which was WAY WAY overkill on that. Mention a guy's name once or twice, after a solo...enough. Also, you need a tuba, instead of a bass, for most songs you played---no insult intended toward "Daddy Longlegs"(you see?). We will probably come see you guys again, depending on the venue.

Great Toe Tapping, Head Bopping Event!

by Kneeva on 3/7/14Charline McCombs Empire Theatre - San Antonio

This show was fantastic!!! With Mardi Gras masks on and beads tossed into the audience, this show had us all grateful we had purchased a ticket! By the time they played "Saints Go Marching", we were up on our feet dancing to the beat!!!
