SLEEP IN CONCERT:

Since reforming in 2009 after more than a decade apart, stoner metal pioneers Sleep have regained their status as kings of the thriving niche genre. In concert the band is as powerful as ever, cranking out their doom-laden riffs and blunt-force rhythms with the same stupefying intensity that propelled them to success back in the ‘90s. Sleep has been described as “the ultimate stoner rock band”, and they prove it without a doubt at their live shows as they pummel fans into a daze with a signature combo of massive riffage, plodding tempos, and hallucinatory vocals from wild-eyed frontman Al Cisneros. Fans looking for an ultra-heavy concert experience won’t want to miss these slacker icons any time they perform trippy anthems like “Dragonaut” and “Holy Mountain” in the flesh.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Sleep formed in San Jose, CA in the early ‘90s from the ashes of sludge metal band Asbestosdeath. They made their debut in 1991 with the album Volume One, a hard-hitting effort that established them as a potent new force in the budding doom metal scene. After following up with the EP Volume 2, the band scored a major breakthrough with their 1992 sophomore LP Sleep’s Holy Mountain, a seminal release that led to a lucrative contract with London Records. With funding to finance their most ambitious album yet, Sleep entered the studio and handed in Dopesmoker, a single hour-long song that the label refused to release after deeming it unmarketable. After failing to appease London Records with a reworked version of the album, Sleep disbanded in 1998 (the record was eventually released in 1999 under the title Jerusalem). After more than a decade apart, the band reunited in 2009 for an exclusive reunion show at Britain’s AllTomorrow’s Parties festival. Since then they’ve continued to tour sporadically while also thrilling fans with news of a return to the studio to record their long-awaited reunion album.
