About

Shirley Brown in Concert

Southern soul stalwart Shirley Brown has been belting it out in front of entranced audiences since she was a teenager in the 1960s, so she's learned a thing or two about how to deliver a song and connect with a crowd. And you'd better believe she puts all of that hard-won wisdom to work every time she hits the stage.

When Brown sits down on the stage to enact that classic phone-call-to-the-other-woman scenario that's at the center of her signature tune, 1974's monster R&B smash "Woman to Woman," she's got a direct line to every member of the audience. Between Brown's larger-than-life voice, which still packs plenty of power, and all the emotion she pours expertly into every song, her performances speak straight to the heart and soul.

Shirley Brown Background

Soul singer Shirley Brown grew up in West Memphis, Arkansas. She got into the game early, starting out under the mentorship of blues legend Albert King when she was only 14 years old. She spent years slogging it out on the road and learning her craft, developing the big, bold voice that would come to serve her so well.

It wasn't until more than a decade later that she released her first single, 1972's "I Ain't Gonna Tell." And it would be another two years before Brown had her first album out on renowned R&B label Stax. That record's title track, "Woman to Woman," became a classic of Southern soul, hitting the top spot on the R&B charts and crossing over to the pop Top 40 as well. In fact, the song would prove to be one of the label's last big singles. It even earned Brown a Grammy nomination in 1975.

Brown scored a couple more hits in the '70s, but a phenomenon like "Woman to Woman" is tough to top. For decades she has remained a powerful force on the Southern soul circuit, with that signature tune as her calling card and plenty of other killer songs in her back pocket.

It was very nice, it was a Valentine's Day surprise for my boyfriend. He really enjoyed the acts. We would have liked it more if you had more room. Also the food was great but the wait was to to long. You missed part of some of the acts getting food. Other than that it was good
