Shen Wei - Not My Cup of Tea

by JAAjr on 6/19/18DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

The Shen Wei performance wasn't my sort of thing. The dancers were great, but the choreography and staging did not engage or immerse me. I'm not a modern dance expert, but the performances I like communicate with me emotionally and often intellectually. This one didn't - which is probably more my problem than theirs. I don't think I would go back to see them again, but many others in the audience around me seemed to get a charge out of it.

    “Neither” was surprisingly bad

by Anonymous on 6/19/18DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

The dancers were professional and did an excellent job. The choreography and soundtrack / singing were so incessant and monotonous that the performance was incredibly one of the worst things I’ve ever sat through. Numerous guests on their way out couldn’t say enough of how they couldn’t wait for the performance to be complete so they could try to enjoy the rest of their evenings.

    Shen Wei most amazing performance.

by Anonymous on 11/25/15Centennial Hall - Tucson

The performance was inspiring and peaceful, The work took you to another level of communication. I recommend researching his work before watching it live. You will gain so much more from the experience of his work.

    Odd performance

by Moodily on 11/25/15Centennial Hall - Tucson

The music was way too loud and not pleasant sounding. The performance was stranger than any modern or avant-garde dance I've seen before. At times, even boring. Big disappointment and wouldn't choose to see this group again.

    Shen Wei is Genius!

by Franee on 11/25/15Centennial Hall - Tucson

This artist is so talented that I have no words to describe him. Before the performance, I saw his art exhibit called "Black, White and Grey" and the first piece on the program seemed to make the art come alive. He creates not only the movements but also the sets and the costumes. The second half was his iconic "Folding" and it felt like meditative dance. The music by John Taverner added to the moves, which were slow and unfolding and I was mesmerized by the imagery that takes dance to a whole new dimension. 45 minutes dissolved into nothingness and I was wishing that this piece could go on and on. I've always viewed Dance as art in motion and Shen Wei delivers. If you see him performing where you are, run to get a ticket.

    Shen Wei's Gravity play

by Artsfans on 6/16/15DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Shen Wei's DPAC show seemed to explore the edges of gravity's pull on the body--resistance, stretch, release, tension, flight, body locomotion. Very creative locomotion!

    Too 'Out There' for Me!

by CHchick on 6/16/15DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Although I found the athleticism pretty amazing I could not get engaged in the performance. The first piece was just too weird and without music didn't seem to have any coherence. The following pieces although better did not exhibit any grace, rhythm, or plot/storyline to make them interesting to me. I admit to preferring pieces with a beginning middle and an end- someway I can get intellectually engaged in the movement and music; unfortunatley none of these performances did that.

    Maps

by jdsnyder on 6/14/15DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

'Maps' was exquisite! I loved the balloons. The piece really showed the choreographer's mastery in use of space and fluidity of shifting groupings of bodies. And the dancers are beautiful, fluid, organic movers. It was satisfying both in technical articulation, choreographic mastery, and visual acuity. 'Untitled 12-2' was a successful blend of the artist's role as painter, choreographer, and installation artist. What was more challenging for me (and my 11 year old niece) was keeping focus in a long piece of a full cast of dancers doing separate movements for the full duration. Something that is very intriguing in an installation space, but demands so much more of the viewer in theatre space.
