    Fine Performers, Fine Performance

by FairfaxPete on 5/18/15Freer Gallery - Washington

While the auditorium is not the best in the city, the Shanghai Quartet certainly demonstrated they are among the best of their type. The program was a bit stodgy, but all three pieces were well played and thus worth hearing. I first learned of the Shanghai Quartet many years ago when I purchased a copy of their recording of the Ravel string quartet which was included on the program. Hearing it played live was by itself worth the trip to hear them. The new piece by Lei Liang was interesting, worthy of hearing again. The conclusion was a fine rendition of Beethoven's Razumovsky #2. All in all an enjoyable evening and one I hope to repeat the next time the Shanghai Quartet plays in the DC area.

    Coldplay was unforgettable!!

Actually, the Shanghai Quartet was very talented and I loved listening to some great classical music, being introduced to the pipa and hearing some Asian tunes and sounds fusioned into a unique composition.

The SHANGHAI QUARTET was perfect on the Beethoven ST Q. Wu Man and the SHANGHAI QUARTET - WU MAN kicked it in on a modern work titled 5 seasons by a Japanese composer, if it were available, I would buy the recording......

    Shanghai at the Freer

    by Al54 on 2/27/11Freer Gallery - Washington

This talented string quartet played superbly in an early work by Beethoven and, after the intermission, in a late Schumann. In between, we heard guest artist Wu Man playing a Chinese four-string lute called a pipa, first in a solo performance and then with the quartet in a new work called Five Seasons, which was introduced by its composer, Lei Liang.
