Seton Hall Pirates Men's Basketball History

The first tip-off for Seton Hall’s men’s basketball team was in 1903, although with no coach and no arena, the team didn't play again for another five years. The "Pirate" became the team mascot in 1931, and in 1936, intrepid professional basketball player John "Honey" Russell took the head coach post and held it for two terms, totaling 18 years. Russell created a winning team that convinced Seton Hall to build its first sports arena, Walsh Gymnasium, which still serves as the home for Seton Hall's women's NCAA basketball team on the university’s campus. Russell's Pirates appeared in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) seven times and won the NIT title in 1953.

The Seton Hall Pirates have made the NCAA Tournament final once, in 1989 when they fell to Michigan in overtime. The team has won three conference tournament titles and four regular-season conference championships. In total, they’ve made the NCAA Tournament 14 times.

Since 1948, 28 Seton Hall Pirates have been drafted into the NBA, including NBA champions Bobby Wanzer, Bob Davies and Andrew Gaze. As a member of the Big East conference since the 1979-80 season, Seton Hall counts among its rivals their fellow "Catholic Seven" universities on the East Coast.

Could have been the greatest game of the year.

by Jeff on 1/29/24Prudential Center - Newark

Buying the tickets was a breeze. On my phone and away we went. Easy entrance and found our seats easily. Great arena but the best is how easy it was once the tickets were purchased.

    Tough venue

by Jim on 1/24/23Prudential Center - Newark

The arena is fine. Food is subpar. The parking and traffic patterns after will definitely make me avoid the Prudential Center. Much better at MetLife and MSG getting in and out.

COVID protocols need to be enforced

    by PY on 1/22/22

Purchased the Seton Hall six game package this year for the first time. The games have been competitive and fun to watch, but I am not pleased with the Prudential Center Covid protocols. For the most part, vaccination cards only get a glance and the majority of people do not wear their masks. Yet the maskless fans continue to show up on the jumbotron and local and national TV. I have never heard an announcement stating that masks are required and their is limited signage throughout the arena. I know that enforcement is not easy, but you can definitely do better. At NJ PAC, almost all patrons are wearing masks during performances.

    Masks up

by LORA on 1/4/22Prudential Center - Newark

Why go through the pretense of having a mask policy when you don't require people to actually wear them while in the venue? Every time people were shown on the jumbotron less than half had on masks properly or at all.

    Disappointed with Ticketmaster

by Seton Hall Fan on 2/5/20Prudential Center - Newark

The Prudential Center employees were very accommodating. Needed their help because I purchased handicap-wheelchair accessible seat but the seats were not wheelchair accessible. We had to take the person out of their wheelchair to sit in a stadium seat. Employee had to store the wheelchair for us. VERY DISAPPOINTING with TICKETMASTER!!
