About

System of a Down founder Serj Tankian was born on August 21, 1967, in Beirut, Lebanon. He and his family immigrated to Los Angeles in 1975. He studied marketing at California State University and started his own software company before beginning his music career with the formation of System of a Down in 1995. In 1998, System of a Down signed on to Rick Rubin's American imprint, and over the following seven years released five well-received albums, the second of which, Toxicity, thrust them into the forefront of the metal community, garnered a Grammy nomination, and sold millions of copies. Tankian utilized his success to influence the political world he often commented on lyrically by co-founding a nonprofit organization called Axis of Justice with Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello. He remained active with System of a Down throughout the mid-2000s and also released a book of poetry, titled -Cool Gardens, before SOAD chose, in May 2006, to go on hiatus of an undetermined length. Tankian made use of this sabbatical to record his first solo album, Elect the Dead, which was released in fall 2007. Three years later, Tankian teamed up with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra to release Elect the Dead Symphony, featuring songs from his solo debut backed by a live orchestra. Tankian's second solo album, Imperfect Harmonies, continued in the orchestral footsteps symphonically re-imagined debut. ~ Gregory McIntosh, Rovi

Serj Tankian + Dan Monti + Orchestra = amazing!

by MetalMermaid on 11/15/16Valley Performing Arts Center - Northridge

This has been the third time that I saw Serj perform with an orchestra and it is simply amazing every single time. Dan Monti's background vocals are more than just the icing on the cake. It really adds a lot. That guy is pretty brilliant. The venue is really nice. Parking is easy, drinks are reasonably priced. Sound was good. Seat could have been better but overall great show.

    Audio Visual Delight

by ConcertBanana on 11/14/16Valley Performing Arts Center - Northridge

I had seen Serj before at a SOAD performance, but I can say that this was a nice change and a more personal feel. His haunting melodies, paired up with the orchestra's powerful sound made it a performance to remember. The visual stage lights blended so well with the music and provided added impact. I loved it!! And I love Serj!

Great show. Some people still used flash on their cells to take pics and there was a rude dude behind us being a jerk. Other than that the show was great

    Serj brings it

by Theeyevanator on 11/13/16Valley Performing Arts Center - Northridge

Very intimate show by serj and the csun symphony. They played his orca symphony while he told us the story behind it, and in between parts he sang his elect the dead album with the guitarist from the FCC . Definitely would recommend if he adds more shows here in the US

    Serj did not disappoint!!

by Verobean on 11/13/16Valley Performing Arts Center - Northridge

This was not Serj Tankian's music put to a symphony; it was a symphony. His Orca Symphony was beautiful and powerful. I wish I could have gone to both nights of the show. I hope it opened the minds of those expecting a rock concert.
