About

SEBADOH IN CONCERT:

Veteran indie rockers Sebadoh are still blasting out gleefully lo-fi tunes more than 20 years after their infamous debut. At the band’s hyper-charged live shows, frontmen Lou Barlow and Jason Loewenstein trade off growling, impassioned lead vocals as they switch between bass and guitar, pummeling listeners with power chords and fuzz-laden guitar feedback. The bass (regardless of who’s playing it) barrels like a bat out of hell, giving the songs a melodic backbone that highlights the group’s impressive songcraft. Meanwhile, drummer Bob D’Amico kicks the tempo into overdrive while adding subtle country and folk flourishes that perfectly complement his bandmates’ sonic fury. Whether they’re on the road in the US or heading overseas for a tour, this power trio always treats ticket buyers to a thrillingly unpredictable rock ‘n’ roll party bursting with ramshackle energy.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Raised in Amherst, Mass., Lou Barlow (born 1966) first rose to prominence playing bass for alternative rock legends Dinosaur Jr. His time with the band inspired him to found Sebadoh in 1986 as a means to record and release his own material. After bringing local drummer and vocalist Eric Gaffney on board, the two released the full-length Weed Forestin’ in 1987. Jason Loewenstein came on as the band’s third prominent vocalist in time for their 1991 album III, which proved pivotal in establishing the indie lo-fi subgenre. Unfortunately, Gaffney left following the 1993 tour for Bubble and Scrape, leaving a hole that several drummers filled before the band announced a hiatus in 1999. The classic lineup of Barlow, Gaffney, and Loewenstein reunited in 2007 for a tour, though Gaffney was later dismissed for inconsistent behaviour. The band found a worthy replacement with Bob D’Amico (The Fiery Furnaces), who brought passionate and precise drumming to the group for The Secret EP (2012) and Defend Yourself (2013). Sebadoh remains synonymous with the quirky, freewheeling sensibilities of lo-fi, and they treat fans to a wild show every time they take the stage.

    SEBADOH 🤘

    by Atom410 on 7/23/19The Underground - Charlotte

Sebadoh played an amazing show despite the small crowd. I actually enjoy smaller venues and crowds. They started the show with stuff from their new album (Act Surprised) and ended with a bunch of their classics. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen.

Powerful, loud, and awesome, with butt-kicking bass and instrumental energy. They played a wide variety of songs spanning from 1987 to 2013, and stayed on stage longer than they were allotted for, taking requests and trying out songs that they hadn't played in years.

    why so damn late?

by SebadohFan on 3/23/15Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

I never saw the show, after driving an hour into Brooklyn, getting dinner, and waiting around for 2 hours. At 10, before the 1st act had finished, we left. Why is it smart or necessary if it isn't smart, to start a show so late on a Monday night?

They were great. but wished they played more of the old stuff. Didn't care much for the new stuff.

    Great Show

by MrKappa on 2/28/14Baby's All Right - Brooklyn

Excellent venue; excellent show. I went with a friend who was new to the band, and while I prefered the acoustic, folky Lou Barlow songs, he much preferred the crazy, noisy Loewenstein numbers. So there was something for everybody!

Long time fan have seen great shows and then some where I think they are just trying to boost their retirement funds! It's like their heart isn't in it sometimes. Also too loud tone it down guys.your voices should be heard clearer.

    Love Lou Barlow

by DarknStormy on 8/24/12Bowery Ballroom - New York

The show was amazing from Circle of Buzzards all the way through until Sebadoh. I've been a long time fan of many of Lou Barlow's music projects and hearing him perform his solo stuff and talk with the audience then again with Sebadoh was like watching an old friend. I was captivated the entire time! It is good to go to a show that has quality performers and an overall solid experience!

    Indie legend plays every song

by Arrested on 11/23/11Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

I've never seen Sebadoh live, and to be honest I'm more of a Dinosaur Jr. fan and only learned about Sebadoh in the last year or two when reading "Our band could be your life." Still, I wanted to see what they sounded like live. They sound pretty damned awesome: frenetic high energy songs full of anger, desperation, and balls, mixed with straighter indie ballad rock songs. The guitar trade-offs worked well - both guitarists have their own styles and bring different edges to the sound. They played forever. Something like a 2 hour set and still going long beyond the time the staff wanted to be at work. Sadly I'm too old to sit through two support acts and a 2 hour headline set.

Sebadoh rocked. Such a warm, fun show. Great to see them let their hair down after a long tour. Great opening acts too, especially Dichroics.
