SCREAMING FEMALES IN CONCERT:
New Jersey-based indie punk outfit Screaming Females has become a favorite with critics and fans alike thanks to their DIY ethos, catchy-as-heck songwriting , and scrappy, stirring live shows. Front and center at the band’s performances is Marissa Paternoster, whose powerful guitar playing and vibrato-heavy vocals set the tone for the snaking basslines of King Mike and pounding drums of Jarrett Dougherty. From the chunky power chords of heavy-hitting anthem “Empty Head” to the more subdued, introspective harmonies of “Hopeless”, Screaming Females serve up a distinctive and potent brand of melodic punk tunes that always get ticket buyers singing along.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Screaming Females formed in New Brunswick, NJ in 2005,and spent their early days performing in the city’s robust basement show scene. After cutting their teeth at unlicesnsed establishments like Meat Town USA, they were picked up by Don Giovanni Records, which reissued the first two self-released Screaming Females albums – 2006’s Baby Teeth and 2007’s What if Someone Is Watching Their T.V.? Their proper debut on the label came in 2009 with Power Move, which the New York Times praised for its “fuzzed-out riffs and psychedelic guitar solos full of scurrying lines and wah-wah abuse”. Since then the band has shared billings with bands like Garbage and Dinosaur Jr., garnered heaps of critical acclaim with their 2012 album Ugly, and appeared on Last Call with Carson Daily. They continued their charge in 2015 with sixth album Rose Mountain, a stellar slice of guitar-driven indie punk that forms a perfect addition to their electric sets on tour.
Screaming Females is my favorite band, has been about 7 years now. I’ve seen many shows and it’s always incredible. Marissa shreds so hard and wails like no one else. The lyrics and artwork are brilliant. They are prolific. I will never not see them when they come around. I go in for hellos every time and always get a hug 🤩
The Screaming Females were incredible. Just an amazing band. This was my first time at the Teragram Ballroom. Great venue. Lots of space. But the best thing about it was the sound quality. I’ve been in a lot of small venues and Teragram is the cleanest sound I’ve encountered. I will be looking for another opportunity to visit.
The teragram is a wonderful venue but the show itself was so incredible. One of the best bands I’ve seen in a long time.
