    Scrapomatic fine; venue awful

by CrimDef1 on 3/4/13B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New York

Scrapomatic is a three-man act that seems to be an offshoot of the Derek Trucks Band. I saw them in Lucille's at BB Kings nightclub in NYC at midnight, after an Allman Brothers show at the Beacon. These shows, featuring ABB spinoffs, are held while the ABB is in their March residency at the Beacon and draw crowds of varying sizes. There are two venues in the basement of BB Kings and the last time I saw one of these was Devon Allman's Honeytribe a few years back and we were directed into the larger room where you could seat yourself and table service took care of drinks and food -- very expensive drinks and food, but I was prepared for that. For this show we were herded into the smaller room -Lucilles- where we were denied tables, instead corralled into the bar area where there was limited space, little seating (nothing but some bar stools) and only one bartender for dozens of people. Everything at these shows is General Admission. A few dozen others, however, got to be seated at cocktail tables right in front of the stage. When I inquired about a table I got no answer. After Derek Trucks arrived and was seated, and the band spoke to some of the seatees, it became apparent that they were friends of the band. The good news was it made it difficult to get the service to be able to pay 7.75 for a domestic beer. The band was fine and have a lot of talent, but the sound system was pretty basic and the result was a somewhat garbled production and a singer who wanted to tell lots of stories that those of us in the corral could not understand.
