About

SCRAP ARTS MUSIC IN CONCERT:

Warning: attending a Scrap Arts Music performance will infuse you with an unshakeable energy and a newfound desire to drum on any and every surface you see. Combining inventive instrumentation and athletic choreography, these masters of percussion put on a theatrical live show that has drawn comparisons to Blue Man Group and Off-Broadway sensation STOMP. The array of "instruments" used are skillfully constructed from recycled scraps like hoses, playground equipment, and balloons, making for a totally unique sound ticket buyers can't experience anywhere else. Scrap Arts Music's kinetic, frenetic energy is absolutely exhilarating, providing a thrilling live experience for concertgoers of all ages.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Scrap Arts Music was formed in Vancouver in 1998 by composer Gregory Kozak and artist Justine Murdy. As Vancouver underwent a massive building boom in the '90s, there was a surplus of high-quality construction scraps up for grabs. The duo's inventive repurposing of that scrap material as musical instruments combined Murdy's background in architecture and material culture studies with Kozak's extensive training in world percussion, Afro-Cuban jazz, piano composition, and modern dance. In three years Kozak and Murdy created more than 100 instruments out of materials like aluminum scraps, artillery shells, exhaust hoses, broken monkey bars, and even old accordions. Since 2001 they've been touring extensively in North America, Europe, and Asia. They won Best Live Performer at the West Coast Music Awards in 2002 and had the honor of performing at the Closing Ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The stunningly creative group continues to thrill ticket buyers with their unbelievable live performances on tour.

    Good show for the family

by Anonymous on 3/10/15Des Moines Performing Arts - Civic Center - Des Moines

Took our two boys ages 8 & 10 to see Scrap Arts Music and while there were many smaller children in attendance, we all enjoyed the show since the music is intended for all ages. The musicians were creative and explained how and why their group exists and the concept of recycling is appropriate and inspiring for everyone. The songs were melodic and interesting and the show was a good length for both fidgety children and adults. It was reminiscent of a field trip taken in elementary school (I imagine they do shows also for this purpose). Worth the low ticket price for sure!
