Savior Glover Sole Santuary was very disappointing

by CBWB on 1/15/13Boston Opera House - Boston

Let me first say that Mr. Glover is an extremely talented tape dancer. However, the Sole Sanctuary show production was very disappointing. I thought the show was to pay homage to the various dancers that influenced Mr. Glover, however, outside of their pictures being on stage, Mr. Glover did not share dialogue with the audience about their influence on him nor highlight the particular tape style of the legends The show did not bring any excitement to the art of dance. To watch Mr. Glover and another dancer tape for 90 minutes, regardless of their skill, is not entertaining, but quite boring. While my belief is to always approach the arts with an open-mind, I also believe that a big part of the experience is gained (or lost) by an artist that can skillfully tell their story and “guide” all of us, whether we are familiar with the arts or not, through the complexities and eccentricities of their artistic work. Don’t leave us behind filling in the blanks…rather, be that guide and let us take the journey with you. Signed, CKat

    Mixed Feelings

by TKateD on 1/14/13Boston Opera House - Boston

Mixed feelings about the show. Savion and all the dancing - phenomenal, but a bit one note. Maybe I should have been more aware of what to expect. No real production. Just 90 minutes or so of side by side, albeit absolutely amazing, dance.

Tap in its most raw form

by TapFanSinceChildhood on 1/14/13Boston Opera House - Boston

Seeing Savion Glover live was really great. It was a performance of just him + one other tapper (who had a distinct rigid style, that nicely complemented the cool effortless style of Savion Glover). It was a true exhibition of talent and complementary styles of tap on display. I think this wouldn't be a great show for people who wanted to see a "performance" with all the bells and whistles and gimmicks of typical performances. This is more a show for those of us who want to witness the art of tap in its most raw form, and appreciate it for that alone.

    Savion's genius

by morky on 1/14/13Boston Opera House - Boston

While there is no denying Savion's genius, a (basically) one-man evening -length piece is a difficult task. The concept was a tribute to the great legends who preceeded Savion. Savion's esoteric riffs and improvs did pay amazing tribute but perhaps the Opera House was too large a space for this intimate feeling. I loved that Savion communicates easily through his dance and he did some amazing technical feats. When he traded off with colleague Marshall Davis, Jr. one could appreciate their differences and talent at variety. The seated buddha-type woman in white was inconsequential. She is not channeling the greats, Savion clearly is.

Have seen Savion many times in the past. Would have preferred to have music accompany the dancing...the showed didn't really seem to have a natural flow to it. Was disappointed...
