Sue Palmer and her Motel Swing Band are fantastic and what a wonderful performance by San Diego Ballet !! I loved the combination of music and dance !!
Beautiful dancing and both live and recorded music.
I felt that the grace of ballet got confused with the beat of the jazz. Musicians were great but the dancers seemed handicapped in their fluid style vs the romping of the music. The two genres just didn’t mix well. It was hard to watch. Enjoying that the Balboa Theatre is making a comeback. Lots of work inside that building still to be done but a wonderful cozy venue
Really enjoyed the swing music of the first half with the ballet dancers dancing to the swing music. Enjoyed the second half, but not as much as the first half. Sue Palmer and her band were phenomenal!
First off Ticketmaster or Live Nation were horrible with our seats. Row X, seats 1 and 2. Most of our row was packed. And we had a great view as there was nobody in the entire 4 rows in front of us, then just spotted from there, and most of them were family’s of performers as they all came with a bouquet of flowers. The first half pace was slow, but the end scene was excellent. At intermission, a lot of people moved 5-20 rows up due to the hundreds of open seats. The seconds half, never ended with the nutcracker coming back out. I admit I bought the tickets at least 6 months in advance thinking it would be a professional ballet, of which there was some, not a ballet school, with 3-16 year olds running around the stage. My fault, I was thinking a theatric version of Nutcracker using mainly professional dancers. Overall still got us some date time away from the kids and wasn’t too bad. Worth seeing, but not every year, like once every 5-7 years we agreed upon.
I was so impressed with the whole production of the nutcracker at the magnolia theater this past Saturday night. Went with my daughter, who still dances, and it was so nostalgic for us. The principal dancers were phenomenal! And, of course, its production with so many talented children, we were especially smitten with the littlest ones. The production had a very campy twist to it, at times, that both my daughter and I left along with I am new to San Diego just recently relocated from New York and I’m a big ballet and dance aficionado. I highly recommend this creative, engaging and joyful production of The Nutcracker🎄🎄🎄🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
San Diego Ballet’s Nutcracker has always been our favorite Nutcracker. The sets, costumes and performance are stellar. Wouldn’t be Christmas without the Nutcracker to set the tone of the season.
A joy to watch! San Diego Ballet is a gem we should treasure!
This ballet was wonderful. I've been a professional dancer and teacher in the area for over 30 years and I found both Carnival of Animals and Midsummer Night's Dream to be exhilarating. I strongly recommend both for children especially Carnival of Animals but both were fun, colorful, playful, beautiful costumes, lovely music (loved the live violin in Dying Swan). The giant puppets were so cool! The technique of the dancers was outstanding as well, especially the two brothers. I'm so glad I attended this ballet and only wish I would have taken my students with me! Next time. I hope they have it again soon.
